Here's a link showing the insides.
You can isolate and insulate them as you say.
I wouldn't cut them, in case you ever wanted to put things back together.
Removing wires altogether by unsoldering at the terminal and selector switch ends is an option. Then you don't have them laying in there.
Step further would be to bypass the selector switch.
And lastly, bypass the entire selector switch headphone jack/pcb board shown in the pic. But that's beyond my knowledge. It could be quite simple or very complex. Maybe other AA inmates could chime in if you wish to pursue this option.
Cheers!

Thanks for the info, did you realize a sound improvement with the
better electrical connections?
I hope so, my 317 is sounding fine, but just knowing I have these poor
speaker connectors makes me silly.
The rest of my system is optimized connection and cable wise.
I was thinking of bypassing the 2 fuses inside with some silver wire,
is that a foolish thing to do?
Looking at the AU 317 service manual, page 4 has a 5A 125V on the voltage selector board. Page 5 has a 1A 250V and a 7A 125V on the power amplifier circuit board.
Unfortunately cannot tell if they are fast or slow blow. You could look at what you currently have inside there.
Cheers!

For something completely different,
is their such a device as a "poor man's"
Ac filter/ conditioner.
This is something on my wish list..
thanks for all of your help and info.
I have a DIY stand alone duplex outlet box big enough to have a Corcom EMI/RFI filter wired into it. Worked great, though I don't use it anymore. You can price the parts out, including filter, box, duplex, power cord, and see if it falls within budget.
If it's just for a single component, I've seen IEC plugs with built in filters. My old Roksan CD player had one. These type may be purchased separately. Albeit they can be very bulky to fit. Otherwise, you just swap it in for the existing plug.
I don't know what any of the power bar strip or tower versions are like.
The DIY one I used only because I had built an outboard DC power supply with only a transformer. I didn't need to regulate it for my needs, but it picked up enough noise to put my Quads into protection mode every time the convection oven in the kitchen cycled on! The filter fixed that issue.
If you're not experiencing anything obvious on your power line, do some research on the filters/conditioners. Lots of pros/cons.
Hope some of this helps.
Cheers!

thanks, I will take a look at the fuse threads and decide.....
5-way binding posts such as suggested by Duster will provide a mechanically stronger connection than spring clips, and as such will improve/maintain the audio quality. I mention "maintain" recalling the many times I refreshed a spring clip connection by cutting off the mangled and tarnished wire ends off the speaker cables, and re-stripping them back to gleaming wire again. Even with the spring clips this process was an improvement.
With the new binding posts, you will no longer need to do this if you use bananas or spades. Even torquing down on bare wire will be better than what the spring clips could muster.
Silver or any kind of wire in lieu of a fuse is a safety hazard. But if you have already tried it and heard an improvement, you can see why many people swap in audiophile quality fuses.
Once you determine your fuse values, swapping them out with new off the shelf fuses can be an improvement in itself as fuses do age over time
If you do some research you'll find high grade fuses by Little Fuse or Schurter that don't cost an arm and a leg. Partsconnexion has some HiFi tuning fuses on clearance available through their site or on eBay. I've had great success with clearance HiFi Tuning and also Schurter. I have not had the opportunity to try any Little Fuse hospital grade because I could not find needed values.
Be careful as you can spend silly amounts on tweaks. Pots, capacitors and resistors can be improved as well. At some point you might have realize you could have sold your Sansui as is. And together with the money budgeted for tweaks could have purchased something that is already overall better.
Of course there's no fun in that... :)
Good luck with whatever you do.
Cheers!
