I bought the Power 3 new when it first came out for $50 delivered, which was such a ridiculously good buy, I knew it couldn't last. Since then it has gotten cryo treatment, which made it a bit better and more extended. I kept the cryo version of the Power 3 and sold the Power 3. For the money, I thought the cords were outstanding.
All of the VD cable that I have tried has excelled at large scale dynamics and slam. Many other brands don't come close in those regards. VD's top tier cable has gotten excellent reviews which describe a house sound similar to what I heard.
It did take a long time for me to get a credit on a return of a digital cable I tried. The cable was excellent, again with outstanding slam and black backgrounds, but not better than what I was using.
The profit margin argument holds about as much water as the "audiophiles can't tell the difference between Monster cable and coat hangers" argument.
Follow Ups:
I'd really like to see that author actually build one and THEN tell us what the profit margin REALLY looks like.
Regarding sound quality, I very much like what I heard from the Power 3 PC. It was vastly superior to the comparably priced cord it replaced.
I've built things similar to that.... it's not expensive to build a cheapo cable. And I called their safety into question some time back, much to the chagrin of most inmates who replied....
VD has been effective in lobbying to keep threads like that referenced suppressed.... moreso at Audiogon, which is one dirty operation...
Glad to see one of the bad guys getting the press they deserve. Cables inspired by god.... suuuuure. Gotta love blasphemy for profit!
I figure you should be able to offer these for about $17.50.

Who said that, Yogi Berra?
Cables inspired by god.... suuuuure.
If you aren't born again, how would you ever know?
I use 18awg solid copper wire for speaker cables. My ultimate version will be silver plated OFC in teflon, same as the hookup wire I use in my amp and speakers, so I just figured I would be consistent with that. I have only tried this in 5ft. runs, shortest possible for my setup. I made some cables from some Belden cat5 network cable that was laying around the house. No recipe really, I just used 2 twisted pairs per speaker. Very nice highs, but some smearing and too much bass (too much capacitance?). Then I tried some Carol 18/5 sprinkler wire. It was not bad, but I removed the outer jacket, and just ended up using the single wires, two per speaker, and reduced the length to 5ft. Ah Ha! Balanced from top to bottom, much better linearity and focus. I know this could have ended up becoming an antenna for all sorts of RF, and have not tried longer runs, but it is worth trying. I also tried some Radio Shack 16awg speaker cable. It sounded terrible. There is a correlation between the price of the wire (quality of copper) and it's performance, but cable geometry is another issue.

try some OCC solid core copper for your spk cables.

Amazing Grace was also an outstanding movie BTW. Worlds better than 'Atonement' in my opinion.
