Just a side note, the 6X4 has a common failure mode where the cathode shorts to the heater. This isn't noted in any of the data sheets I've seen, but it's become a well-known phenomenon over the years. Somehow, Akai must have known about this in the early days, because the power supplies in the old Terecorders and M8s use a separate, floating winding for the 6X4 filament. That's the only way to circumvent the risk. As far as I know, the 6X5 (functional equivalent of the 6X4, but in an octal) does not suffer from this.

Follow Ups:
The 6X5 was famous for shorting out and ruining radio power transformers. The only one of this type I trust is the 6CA4.
That's good to know. I only use the 6X4 when a separate filament winding is available. I'll treat the 6X5 the same way in any future builds. :)
