after owning one long ago and regretfully selling it, I recently picked up another AES Super Amp (og version). I love this thing and it is amazing with my recently assembled Altec "Valencias".
I've been having fun trying different output tubes. It came with TS EL34Bs and Ruby KT88s. I also found some 6v6GT from an old maggie console amp that i bought long ago.
The KT88 and EL34 are both great, but i'll be darned if those 6v6GT's aren't absolutely amazing. Razor sharp imaging and frightening dynamics with sounds exploding out of total darkness and incredible texture on every instrument. I watched a movie with my boys and I have never experienced such a 3D soundfield with a movie at home, maybe anywhere.
my Q is, is this a result of the 6v6 tube type, or is this the vintage tube magic that everyone is after?
Follow Ups:
The answer really depends upon the bias points in your amp. It is unusual to have a self-biasing amp that uses such a range of output tube types.
With that qualification, having experimented with many, many different types of power tubes and many, many variations within those types, my conclusion is that manufacturer and era play a more important role than tube type. In other words, swapping a fine old vintage 6V6GT in place of a new JJ6V6S would be more fruitful than moving between all new JJ versions of KT88, EL34 and 6V6GT. Of course, your output power will vary, and your system must bias correctly for that range of tube types.
That is helpful guidance, thanks!
