The 12au7 is not very linear. In some circuits, circuits that use a lot of feedback, it doesn't matter much. But as a gain stage with no feedback there are much better choices.

I understand SOME of this, but not what it means to the details of the circuit as spellec out by the VTA folks.
3 of 'em on the driver board....the L and R are run as something to do with 'long tail'...whatever the heck THAT is...while I think the 'center' tube is used to split the L/R signal........
After that? BZZZZZZZZ
Some guy online said he used a GE 6829 for the CENTER tube with the others apparently left alone.
this is a 20$ tube! Not much as such things go...
Does this help? You might visit ithe 'tubes4hifi' site and look at the driver board configuration. It also includes a SINGLE bias adjustment for EACH output tube. And a simple procudure to do so.....
I still don't see ANY company using an 'inferior' tube....or at least a tube NOT used to good advantage and than SELL the product. Doesn't make sense, since I see 4 or 5 'interchanges' for that 12AU7 start.....Who knows? Every time I look, somebody has done something ELSE with another tube....including rewiring socket for yet ANOTHER tube.
Too much is never enough
If that fabled 'tube sound' is just the absence of linearity...
