...with an amp I built for a friend....was soooo careful to match every resistor perfectly and got a noticeable imbalance which I traced to my pair of new EH 12AX7's. Once I put in an older pair of Telefunkens of unknown vintage the issue went away.

I'm building a headphone amp for myself and THIS time....I am putting in a balance control among other things.
