The simple answer is you can't predict what will happen if you don't bias. If you don't check, and your tube is overbiased, you will experience premature tube failure and increased output. If your tube is underbiased, you will experience increased distortion, lower output, and lower output. In any case, you will probably experience an "off center" soundstage if you don't rebias. I've found that a difference in the recommended bias current of as little as five percent will shift the soundstage left or right. To cut to the chase, biasing is not a complicated affair -- on the outside, it might take five minutes per channel to do. Why not just go ahead and do it?

  I guess I`m not sure how to do it. I do have an old Simpson voltmeter that still works and an Auto-Ranging LCD Digital Multimeter from the Rat Shack and also have Golden Tube owners manual that have instructions, will this be suffice to do the Bias? I guess I`ve been afraid I would damage the amp, however I do take equip apart for cleaning and such. Anything I should look out for while attempting this? thanks Bob Meyer

    Your manual should provide detailed instructions on how to bias your tubes. It's not a very involved procedure. My Cary's provide a 1/4" phono plug connnected to two wires that I plug into the back of my amp. From there, I simply hook up my multi-meter and adjust it til it meets factory specs.

If the amp is self biasing no, otherwise you should rebias..

    It's not a matter of "will it burn out my tubes." Unless your tubes are grossly out of whack, they won't burn out, but their lifespan will be shortened -- and they won't sound their best. You obviously bought tubes because you thought they sound better. Don't you want your amps to sound their best? Spend a few minutes and bias 'em.
