You can either use the speakers in a small room/closet to get the room gain or use them with the BAF. Otherwise the port is overdamped.
For a given box size, usually can't achieve deeper and louder at the same time. By overdamp the port, it can go deeper. By using the BAF, bring out the louder. You can have both. Well done engineers!
.
But even a super well designed ported speaker has more overhang than a well designed closed box. It's just physics. I happen to have custom 18" woofers that can be ported or a sealed port. The port design is superb, better than almost all the ported speakers I've heard. But the closed version is definitely better defined although it gives up a bit less than half an octave(-3 dB is 23 Hz ported and 33 Hz sealed). And the ported version is richer, more musical as a result of well controlled overhang but still over hang in the bass.
It all depends on the port size. Smaller size port is close to a closed enclosure. And it can be overdamped.
And small port size can mean the bass at high levels rolls off earlier than at lower levels. The port is a band pass radiator and a small port has more limited capacity to act as the port was designed for. So now you limit the plusses of a port to get bass quality that is still below a closed box.
One concept is stuffed port. If the port is sufficiently stuffed(like the old Dynaco A25) it doesn't extend the bass at all. The box resonance stays the same but the system Q, the damping or bass quality improves even over the same size closed box. But, of course, the amount of bass is lower even though it goes as deep as the regular closed box.
What I am doing here?
audiophiles are very special.
I can't believe it.
