Must it be a 45 degree split, because I think I have seen a picture of "uneven" split in a longish rectangular room? And also any comments about toe-in of speakers?

the easiest way to accomplish this is to work with a selected diagonal of the room. i would chose a full corner with no doorways and use opennings behind the listening position for energy release. the speakers should be placed on an imaginery line approximately 3 feet to the right and left (tweeter to tweeter) of the diagonal and at right angles to it. make sure that the back of the speakers is a minimum of 12 inches from the wall behind it. i usually have them 15 to 18 inches away. then use the merlin alignment tool to set the toe angle. works like a charm with a minimum of room treatment. i know it looks odd but small squarish rooms can be made to sound amazingly good.
good luck.

When you say "selected diagonal" does this mean from corner to corner, thereby suggesting an asymetrical placement in a rectangular room (and not a 45 degree mirror image)? Thanks much for the information you are providing on this, including distance from the wall, which would have been my next question had you not already answered it.
in a square room the set up would be symetrical because you are listening down the diagonal.
in a rectangular room and one that is only slightly off square, the set up would not be symetrical because we are again listening down the diagonal.
if you go to www.merlinmusic.com and look at our show set up in vegas (in the picture gallery) you will see that the set up is not sysmetrical because the room is 21 by 24.
true retangular rooms would use a conventional short wall or long wall set up.
for my speakers i prefer the short wall as a rule due to my recommended listening distance and because you can propagate a longer bass wavelegnth.
hope i got this to you in time for you to see it.
