Hello All,While reading Ethan's site on insulation and audio absorption, I noticed a statement indicating that mineral wool is essentially the same as FG. However, one can obtain 4" thick Owens Corning MW for less than 1/2 the price of equally thick 703. At what frequencies are these really the same? I would like to obtain a few panels for mid-high freq absorption, and others for mid-low.

They're probably close enough not to matter. You could track down absorption data for every material you're considering, but even that won't tell you much. Most data doesn't go below 125 Hz, and testing labs can vary by 50 percent or more at that frequency and below anyway. One big difference between mineral wool and rigid fiberglass is that mineral wool is "floppy" and doesn't hold its shape well. So that might be a factor depending on how you plan to install it.
Hi Ethan,Thanks for your insight. I figure that if it's easier to handle from a stray fiber perspective (no itch!) I could easily place a center brace in the frame that I'd build to maintain some of it's shape. One can get 48 sq ft of 4" MW for about $80.00. Not bad at all.
