Hi Dawnrazor,
The skinny of the jargon is you can select lightweight software to make better use of your hardware and a low latency realtime kernel to get more predictable, repeatable performance results (read: eliminate playback glitches).
YouTube video playback appears to work better on Linux than Windows using the same hardware implying Linux is more efficient.
REW software is used to measure your system and to make audio filters. Audacity software is an audio analyzer/editor/transcoder/recorder that can also capture digital audio streams via a software loopback (i.e. you can capture streaming digital audio from other programs).
I use JRiver Media Center which supposedly can use the JREMOTE app via an iPhone or Andrioid tablet. I have never tried it on an iPhone or tablet.

There is also an ugly web browser playback interface to JRMC.
I normally use either a remote desktop connection or another copy of JRiver Media Center to control the local or remote client.
I am not sure how you would configure the Dante card to switch between multiple remote clients (possibly with different Zones in JRMC). I think that is a question best answered by the card vendor. If the vendor has a Linux usage document, please share it. I assume it is IP based and would require some type of configuration per remote device.

I should have been more clear. I am familiar with the audio jargon and software you mentioned, just none of the linux stuff.
This is some good info and thanks for it.
Dante is a network audio protocol and all the devices show up in software called Dante COntroller. I would need an instance running on one computer on the network to control things. JRMC would talk to the card via the asio drivers or Alsa drivers ( or both if they work together). Then the card would show up as a option in the Dante Controller software and you can basically listen to what is being played from JRMC on any other Dante device.
Without boring you with the specifics the pict is my existing Dante Network with transmitters at the top and receivers at the left. You can just click the device you want to listen to.

Dawnrazor,
I searched JRMC's INTERACT forum for Dante posts. There are only a few posts and there appears to be issues with trying to play the same content to multiple Dante devices simultaneously. If your use case is a single device at a time, it appears doable.
You might be pioneering the Dante effort with JRMC on either Windows or Linux.
Weird. If JRMC can play to one device via asio then the network should distribute it to any or all devices if you set it up right. Said another way it should have nothing to do with the playback software.
