battery died necessitating its replacement with my current MacBook Pro.
But the good news is that the MacBook Pro has a decent TOSLINK out of the headphone jack so I do USB audio with it no more.
TOSLINK to the Chord Mojo or my Audio-GD DAC/Headphone amp work fine up to 24/96 and sound better to my ears that USB.

Were you plugging and unplugging constantly? I haven't had any USB port failures on my laptops or PCs over the years that I can recall. But I'm usually pretty easy on my stuff. I still have 5 year old tennis shoes ;-)

That just means you haven't been playing enough tennis! ;)

You're right about that! The last time I played tennis was 5 years ago when I popped my Achilles tendon behind my right ankle. Partner and I actually heard it "pop", and then he drove me home 'cuz I couldn't shift my manual transmission car. Had to wear a boot until after having surgery a couple weeks later. Then P.T. for several weeks.
Doctor told me ruptured Achilles are a common occurrence with old guys like me playing tennis or basketball. ;-)
USB ports on my 'headless' Mac Mini will last forever.
The laptop had a USB cable plugged in anytime I wanted to play music from it (mostly streaming).
Now I just plug in a Lifatec mini TOSLINK cable into the headphone jack and there are no electrical contacts to wear, etc.
