Apple assumes that every user knows nothing about computers and only uses whatever Apple determines that you will use.
It seems like many updates break something because seemingly, they don't care. When I upgraded to Yosemite, Apple decided that I wanted the new version of Apache without key utilities that were standard in Mavericks. Then, I couldn't use ssh to get into the Mac Mini. Of course, Apple decided that I should use the default port and changed my changes to their default setting. It just goes on and on.
My motto is 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it!'

It's just so frustrating. For smaller peripheral companies or even the large conglomerates, maintaining drivers that meet the latest security protocols is a full-time project. And Apple is just cavalier about all of those existing installations; they don't care if they just bricked 20,000 people's interfaces, because that's the manufacturer's problem. But what if you have a Lynx Hilo or another small company product that doesn't have a whole department working on new drivers? And for all the existing installations of perfectly good legacy products that no longer get any driver support?
Apple: buy an interface compatible with Catalina or contact your manufacturer. Gee, thanks Apple. I so love your products and concern for my security. Not.
I think I've been spoiled by Linux. I started with that OS about 20 years ago and my transitions over the years from OS updates have been mostly smooth. Sure there have been some changes, but documentation is good and I've never been in a position where an existing program or function was bricked by the change.
I've only watched the Apple show from the sidelines, but they do seem rather cavalier about the untenable positions they put many of their loyal customers in when new models come out. But, given the financial success of the company and the loyalty of their base, why would they change?
