Well I found out personally that the USB step may not be the most critical component in the computer playback scenario.
When I replaced my win 10 PC music server with a Raspberry running Volumio, I couldn't believe the improvement, even though Volumio is reading files from the same PC hard drive (using windows shared network drive).
Same USB DAC, same everything actually, but instead of plugging the USB dac into the computer, I plug it into the USB of the Raspberry so bypassing Win 10 audio system.
Whoa, I couldn't believe the improvement!
And Raspberry is typically considered to have a crappy USB...
There must be something wrong with me for not having something wrong.

I suspect your experience was a result of dumping Windows and going to Linux. I was using a RPi but decided to use it for other purposes and replaced it with an old laptop - but it also runs on Linux. It would be nice if I could stick with the laptop. If not, I will get another Raspberry and a Digione and go with SPDIF. In any case, I still remain skeptical of Schiit's claim.

yep, that was my point. Win 10 s4cks for music server through USB.

Thinking about this, I just realized the RPi 4 by itself may be a good solution. The ethernet port is no longer connected to the USB hub and that should reduce noise. Also there are 2 USB-3 ports so transfer from the HDD will be faster (I don't know if that really matters). I assume the USB-3 ports use a different hub than the 2 USB-2 ports and that may further isolate the output.
Does anyone know if Raspberry has fixed the problem with the USB-c power supply?

I use USB y cable with the DAC so it has additional supply to draw from.
