One reason that you may have found LMS not as stable or as 'glitch free' as another O/S, is that LMS is much more feature rich and powerful than a proprietary O/S .... This is basically an "Engineering Principle". The more features and hardware that you support the more complex the Setup etc.
I have tried many different O/S for Music Streamers, and some are remarkably simple to set up and use. Like Volumio for instance. You can get it going in a Flash, but you soon run into lacking features etc.
The main problem I have with Hardware specific O/S, like bluesound is that they don't support a lot of features (that you described in your original post) and they are not upgraded for newer features and support of new streaming services. LMS however is an open software product and has a cadre of Worldwide developers that are constantly developing new features, by fellow audiophiles.
What you can do rather cheaply is get a Raspberry Pi also. Then try out its features and see what you think... It's not a Mega Buck decision. $175 will get a Superb Player! You can own both.
What I will do when I return from my Winter Vacation Destination (Antigua, West Indies) is buy a Bluesound from Crutchfield and play with it for a month or so, to evaluate it. I'll probably return it, but I'll give it fair shot.
Follow Ups:
I'd be interested in your impressions of BluOS, as well as the Node 2i. I considered RPi but went with a "plug-and-play" setup instead. Because NAD is supporting BlueOS for it's controller I think they'll stay current as to the features and services they offer.I'm still in the market for a quality renderer using a Windows-based controller for the main system so I keep my eyes out for alternatives.

I am sure that they will eventually offer New Products that contain features that you want. But of course you'll have to buy them.
The firmware upgrades have been free, but yes, you had to upgrade hardware after the first generation to get all the new features. Not unusual, especially with an evolving technology. I didn't buy a Bluesound Node until generation 2 so avoided the need to upgrade.
I'm probably not representative of users needing the latest streaming features available; it's a small part of what I listen to. For serious listening I use a NAS library with ethernet connectivity to the renderer (Node 2i and external DAC) with a Win10 tablet for the controller. If I upgrade anything right now it'll be the DAC.

the answer is yes to C-T's question regarding your impression based upon (old) hardware?
As for me, I now avoid all-in-one appliances like the Node 2i. I use external DACs with both RPi and Sonore Rendu based systems.
I'm still in the market for a quality Windows-based renderer for the main system so I keep my eyes out for alternatives.
I used Win7 for many years as server. I am far happier using a Synology NAS for housing both server software and managed storage.
I don't have any experience with LMS or Squeezebox; ketchup did.
But I didn't correctly describe what I'm after. I'm looking for a stand-alone renderer that uses a Windows/Android-based controller. I have a Synology NAS drive set up to use with BluOS and the Bluesound devices and it works well but if there's a better alternative I'd consider it. Thus, my interest in Cut-Throat 's impressions of the Node 2i.

PS: I used to be called "ketchup" when I was a kid, as in: "Hey, ketchup, where's the mustard?" :-)
Like me, he began with LMS/Touch players and migrated to the RPi platform.
He's wondering why Ketchup believes BlueOS is superior to LMS - and I suspect he has not used anything but a SB with it.
Yes, that's true, but I was using it with an external DAC. I am very tempted to try an Rpi with my Border Patrol DAC.

While the Allo Digi player is essentially what I have, don't skimp on the power supply. Using a noisy ten buck switcher is not going to get you the best results.I prefer using a linear or battery connected via a starquad DC cable for lowest noise and best dynamics.

Do you need to do a shutdown command when disconnecting power to Rpis these days? With my older Rpi, simply unplugging the power cord can corrupt the SD card if it's in the middle of a write operation. Is that still an issue?
I just turn off the battery when I'm done. No problems.
That could be a function, however, of the pCP image. It is loaded entirely into memory at boot such that could even pull the microSD card while running.
But, I might order one to play with. Crutchfield has a 60 day return policy. And I've bought enough TVs, DACs, and Auxiliary Amps from them over the years that I have little guilt for doing this. And there is always the chance that I may keep it.
I've done this with Sonos and other products from them.
Go for it and let us know.
As I mentioned earlier, I no longer have interest in purchasing an all-in-one-appliance. Instead, I've re-purposed two old iPads for such. :)
I don't have an interest in 'All in One' Appliances either. Especially the ones that allow the playing and Burning of CDs.
I would not even try the internal DAC of the Node 2i either. I would just try it out as a streamer as it does have Digital Outputs. I mainly want to see how it stacks up in Sound Quality vs. A Digione Player.
I never used the internal DAC of a SBT either.
I eagerly await your findings. As you know, I don't have a computer at home which has made it difficult for me to augment a Pi at home. I run the BS node through a Auralic Vega DAC and have been pleased with the results. I am sure there are better streamers out there but the wife is comfortable with the BS software on my iPad. It will be interesting to see how the BS stacks up against the Pi for $400 more!
Looking forward to fishing updates. I have dusted off my waders and will duck hunt the week of 1/6 for the first time in 6-7 years.

come to Pittsburgh, Will. Or You could go to Baltimore today:-)

Arkansas.
Hi Will. Currently in Antigua in the West Indies for the Winter... Walked the flats yesterday for Permit... Didn't see any, but the water was warm and the scenery was great!
