I believe there are two different adapters. One of them is just a Lighting to USB adapter only like this and there's no way to charge the iPhone while using it:
The other one is Lightning to USB adapter with USB-C power input. You attach to your iPhone & DAC like you normally would. Additionally, you can apply power to the small USB-C jack with a USB Battery Pack.
Look at this ComputerAudiophile webpage and scroll down for some photos that show what's going on.

You all have this wrong. He has the later version of the camera adapter. One side is lightning male on a short cable that goes to the phone. The other side is lightning female and USB. You plug the dragonfly into the USB. The lightning female does NOT need to be connected for this to work, but it allows charging while listening if you have a charger handy. The Dragonfly takes very little power and I've used it for hours without charging the phone, or at least a long NYC subway ride.
Glad you were able to understand his question cuz I couldn't ;-) I understand your answer but I still don't get his issue. It now seems pretty straight forward to me:
- Use the Adapter attached to iPhone on one end, DAC on the other end.
- Optionally, use an iPhone charger with Lightning cable. Or not.
Given these connections, I'm not quite sure what the issue is.
