You might want to see if Roon recognizes it. Oh wait, you're happy with LMS ;-)
I might get a Chromecast Audio (which is just the Audio version, no video) and see how it does vs the RPi and microRendu.
Follow Ups:
there is an LMS plugin available for those devices. Might be an option for C-T.
I thought you might get the hint...... I can send it to you to try out... Just cost you the postage. (Actually I can cover that also)Cut-Throat

I don't have a convenient way to test the HDMI version, which is what the original Chromecast has. But I appreciate the offer. Thank you.

No issues with the original hdmi chrome cast, it even support album art! Additionally. Roon will soon support sending album art to a hdmi chromecast even if it is not the endpoint, and even if it is not compatible with the audio group.
Chromecast audio and videos have been rock solid for me since the Roon update. They are not RAAT complaint but they do show as lossless. Another beautiful addition to Roon.
Good to know that the original Chromecast works great over HDMI with Roon but the only HDMI device I have in my office listening room is a TV mounted up on the wall with its tiny built-in speakers.I may get the Chromecast Audio device which has no video capability but outputs audio over a combo 3.5mm jack that support analog and mini TOSLINK output.
I do have a couple AppleTV boxes feeding AV receivers over HDMI in our bedrooms. These work fine with Roon including displaying album art but in this application I think AppleTV down samples the audio to 48KHz - which is fine for the bedroom setups. Chromecast goes up to 24/96KHz.
An interesting test for me would be the compact turnkey $35 Chromecast Audio using 3.5mm analog out vs my DIY RPi with the Allo BOSS DAC. The $65 BOSS DAC is just a small PCB that connects and sits on top of the RPi. I've had it in my main setup and it sounds good but not nearly as good as a quality audiophile outboard DAC. I'm sure the BOSS DAC can be tweaked to death but that's not the point here.
I have the RPi + BOSS DAC in the garage setup with a Wifi dongle antenna for wireless streaming. This DIY setup drives a nice powered speaker for music via Roon in the garage. In this application Roon Bridge is loaded on the RPi so its using RAAT protocol and supports upwards of 24/192 or more but most of my content is from CD rips and some 24/96 downloads. I doubt if 'hi-res' files make any difference here with the powered speakers being the weak link. But it's just a garage setup.
Chromecast Audio has been out for a while but what got me interested is support for Roon, which is a recent development. I'll get the Chromecast Audio at BestBuy and try it in the garage and see how it does.
