Reading all of that just reinforces how out of my element I am.I'm really not asking about the whole raspberry pi world. What I'm hoping for is a guide specifically on using a Pi as a music streamer with Roon Bridge, step by step, for the total newbie to computers.
I have no idea from that site how to do anything really. I don't even know how to see the Pi. Do I need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.? That's the total lack of knowledge level I'm on.

What I'd love to hear is that I can just . . .Open the box, take out the player, the micro SD card and the power supply.
Put the SD card (which has the Dietpi OS preinstalled) into a slot on my MBP's dongle.
Then go to the Roon download page and click download on Roon Bridge and direct it to the SD card (and hope the Roon page walks me through any details for downloading).
Then insert the SD card into the Digione, connect the player to an ethernet cable and the SPDIF cable into the Oppo.
Then turn on the Diginone.
Finally, have my Roon Core identify the Digione as an endpoint/Zone, enable and activate it as a Zone, and play music.
Could it be that easy? I am guessing there are many more steps, because when I suggested that to a friend of mine who set up a Pi as a USB player with JRiver, he laughed and said I clearly had no idea what I was in for. He said that I would need a monitor and a USB keyboard and Mouse to do the set up, and that it would involve several steps.
So, that's where I am scratching my head.

As you have already discovered from Allo, they pre-install the Roon Bridge software so you should be set.
As an aside, once you have the RPi/DigiOne booted up and on your network with the DietPi microSD installed, you add and remove software while the RPi is on the network.
You do not attach the microSD card to you Mac to install various software components. You do so only if you're placing a complete new OS/Player package onto the microSD card - like DietPi, piCorePlayer, Volumio, etc.
Have fun!

Fingers crossed, should be up and running tomorrow.

I could certainly help you set up PiCorePlayer on your Raspberry Pi, as it is what I use. I know that Roon Supports Squeeze-lite, which is what PiCorePlayer will install on your Raspberry Pi. I had Roon running in my system for a few days on a trial basis.Which is Option #1 on this webpage: https://www.picoreplayer.org/
I can even help you via a phone call, if you can't get it going.....

Just don't panic, and relax. --- You don't even have your Pi yet.... And yes, 'you are out of your element", as I would be also, until I figured it out...And as the other poster noted, you could start with volumio, which would be easier. I would have recommended it but I don't think it supports Roon, which is where you wanted to go. And I told you, look at this as a '1 Week project'... rather than a 10 minute project. Your 'In an ideal world' example was a 10 minute project... I said you will probably have it running in a week or so... And you'll end up learning that it really wasn't that difficult.
Also, Abe may tell you that DietPi is not the way to go for you, and that's OK... I had told you that it does not matter what software you order, because you can always download something else. There is Volumio, PiCorePlayer, and as another Poster mentioned Archphile (which I had not heard of)...... So again, relax.
