but he should buy the dedicated power supplies and use balanced with dc coupling. He will also need a good usb to I2S or spdif converter.

Otherwise consider the $700 Teac UD501 w/o ESS dac

  The Teac is a reasonable suggestion. Even though it is not a Sabre DAC it is something well worth trying. I have been thinking of picking one up.

    Even more reasonable is the Schiit Bifrost with Uber analog upgrade. But that uses an AKM DAC, so I did not mention it either.
