New HDCD player is coming tomorrow, and I have a 2-for-1 promo at CDNOW, so please recommend a couple of well recorded jazz CDs with HDCD or XRCD encoding. Preferably ones that CDNOW carries.I prefer complex jazz (Patricia Barber, Tiger Okoshi, ECM stuff) to easy listening (Diana Krall, Chesky stuff).
TIA,
Stefan
Follow Ups:
I'd recommend Bill Evans Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Art Pepper's Meets the Rhythm Section. Both are XRCDs.
Stefan;
Go to www.fantasy.com, and check out their 20 bit remasters. These use the same JVC process that XRCD uses, and they sound fantastic. Particularly the Prestige Anniversary issues. I've got the Bill Evans 'Sunday at the VV' XRCD, and the remastered 'Waltz for Debby'. No appreciable difference to my ears. And these are $16 vs $20+ for XRCD. More bang fer yer bucks. CDNOW should carry these, so print a list and crosscheck for the titles. I've got many of these, and like 'em all very much. You might pick up Miles' mid-fifties series (Relaxin', Steamin', Workin', Cookin') as a start. Coltrane's 'Soultrane', Monk and Coltrane, Sonny Rollins 'Sax Collossus', etc. Check the new release section, MANY great titles coming out Tues., including 'Sunday at the VV'. Can't miss, IMHO. These are also available in stores (Borders, etc.), so when the sale is over, you can find them there.Patricia Barber's 'Companion' is excellent on redbook, pick it up if you don't have it. Anything on ECM sounds fantastic, although I don't think it's HDCD. Try Keith Jarrett Trio, 'Tokyo '96' for a fantastic live set. Good luck, and enjoy! What player did you get, BTW?
thanks!
Stefan;
URL included here. I guess a search for 'fantasy' might yield someinteresting hits, few of which are jazz-related! Good luck!
Thanks, I found it eventually! I ordered the Art Pepper (Meets Rhythm Section) and Bill Evans (Sunday at VV) on 20-bit CD from CD-NOW for $13.99 each. That's nice dinner/late-night music so I went for them on CD.But there are a few Sonny Rollins essentials that I don't have: Sax Colossus, Tenor Madness, +4 ... and I was thinking of getting the Fantasy Vinyl that CD-NOW sells for $8.99. I have that Way Out West, but nothing to compare to, what is your opinion of their inexpensive vinyl? They're obviously not the latest re-masters as they've been around for a few years.
These vinyl issues were almost without exception well recorded and are easily worth the $8.99. You may not be getting the 180 gram vinyl of many of the remastered LPs, but then you're not paying $25 to $30 for them either.
Stefan;
Glad you found the site. Have Sax. Collossus, sounds great. Can't help on the vinyl angle, I'm all digital. Hope you like 'em!
Thanks, lots of good info there! Although I find anything from Miles before his Columbia years boring. Player is an SFCD-1, which I bought used without hearing one ever. I love it so far, and finally getting into HDCD. I guess the Brubeck Time Out I nagged today for C$11.98 has to be the cheapest HDCD I've ever seen. I have all the Patricia Barber and Companion sounds phenomenal - can't wait to try it on the SFCD-1.
While I haven't done a direct comparison, I'd expect the DCC remasters of Miles Davis Quintet to sound better than the Fantasy 20-bit reissues.Most new ECM albums are very well recorded; their earlier stuff (70s - early to mid 80s) may sound a little dull, IMO.
Hey SL;I'd agree on earlier ECM, got the Jarrett 'Koln Concert' (70s), and it is not nearly as good as his 90's releases sound quality.
DCC stuff is also much harder to come by - the Fantasy remasters are available in stores now, and have more coming. Like to support these reissue programs where possible to encourage more of it's kind. And again, at only $16 (DCC's can be quite a bit more, to say nothing of the OOP resales on ebay), try one or two and see. You may be pleasantly surprised, I know I was. Fantasy has quite a back catalog, it seems; Miles, Coltrane, Monk, MJQ, Sonny, Evans, etc.
and I am quite satisfied with the sound - Miles Davis (Walkin'), two Sonny Rollins albums, and Monk and Coltrane.I remember doing a direct comparison between the Fantasy CD of MD's Walkin' and the Japanese JVC/Victor CD of the same album (mini-LP sleeve); ultimately I preferred the Japanese disc, but the difference was next to marginal, and I am not sure at all that it would justify the difference in price.
I kept the Japanese CD, but since then I have been trying to get the US version, if available, before ordering one of those JVC discs.
SL;
Yeah, been eyeing Red Trumpet and the embarassment of riches there, and will probably get a few Jap. items to see what all the fuss is about. Until then, as I build my collection, the Fantasy's, RVG BN's, and Verve ME's are quite satisfactory. And SACD, well that is to die for. Plenty to keep me busy (and broke). As I just got into jazz heavily in the past year, have none of the duplication problems some others do. Of course, I went 40+ years without hearing Mingus do 'Goodbye, Porkpie Hat'. Now THAT is the real loss.The only Fantasy with less than topnotch sonics I have is MJQ's Django, and not by much. Earlier 50s master's, maybe. If you like guitar, Wes Montgomery's Incredible Jazz Guitar is nice, none of the fluff like his mid-60s stuff. And next Tuesday, new ones out include a couple Monk's (Brilliant Corner's & Monk's Music), Bill Evans (Sunday At The VV), Blakey (Caravan), Cannonball/Evans (etc. Looks like a great time to be a jazz fan.
Also heavily into it this past year and regard myself a newbie. I did pick up a few SACDs that are a duplication of what I already owned. Probably more to come but I'll be selective. I do have many of the Fantasy 20 bit recordings BTW, and think for the most part that are great for the price!! The sound quality is icing on the cake!!
and the new Fantasy remaster of Incredible Jazz Guitar does sound much better than the OJC CD that I used to have. The two albums on DCC (So Much Guitar and Full House) are excellent in terms of both music and sound. They also did Going Out of My Head, which is one of his later "commercial/crossover" albums... very good sound again, but a disappointment musically.Have MJQ's Django on the XRCD issued for Japan (was a present, I wouldn't have spent that kind of money on it myself;-). Seems to sound slightly worse that Concorde, which is a excellent sounding US XRCD release.
A place called Music for a Song sells 'cut-out' versions of the DCC Wes Montgomery gold discs mentioned above for $10 each. They have other DCC and MF gold discs as well.
If CD Now has the XRCD issues of the Three Blind Mice recordings, pick up one, preferably one without vocals.
This is the only one I could find. It's rediculous how little info CDNOW has! How do they expect to sell a $30+ CD with NO info!?Unless you were referring to the Art Blakey albums?

Thanks
This is a sampler of Three Blind Mice recordings, but the price seems high to me. I don't remember ever paying that much for my XRCD recordings.
You're right, that must be the Import price. I found it at RedTrumpet for $25.99 which is obviously the domestic price. The domestic XRCDs at CDNOw are $23.49.
Thanks, eh!

Though the HDCD light may come on for this disc (my player does not have HDCD) I believe that is not HDCD encoded. Instead the Pacific Microsonics mastering system was used for final noise-shaping only. However, a foible of this mastering system is that it sets the HDCD bit even though the HDCD encoding is not used. Jon Marks discusses this issue on his web-site.
Regardless, the CD is excellant (and even if it turns out I'm wrong and it is HDCD encoded it sounds very fine played back without HDCD).Take five

the HDCD was 1/3 the price of the SACD so I grabbed it, thanks for the reminder.

Almost any of the jazz titles issued by JVC as XRCD or XRCD2
remasters are worth having. A visit to www.xrcd.com will give
you a list of available titles.Mike
Been there, I like the Carmen Lundy & Tiger (having just picked up the XRCD2 sampler).The site doesn't seem to list all of them.
This site lists "domestic" XRCDs only. There are plenty of "import"
XRCDs, the only difference being that the "imports" cost more.
"Imports" eventually become "domestic". One of the best sites
I know of for imported cds - by any mfgr. - is www.redtrumpet.com.
Be warned, though, that redtrumpet is expensive. My advice is that
you (1) figure out which ones you want to buy, and then (2) search
the web high and low for the best price. I have purchased "domestic"
XRCDs as low as $20 or $21 plus shipping.Happy Hunting.
Mike
I confess I've always balked at the premium prices asked for XRCDs, which is why I don't own any. I do have a smattering of HDCDs. If your player has HDCD capability and you have had the opportunity to compare, how does XRCD compare to HDCD soncially? For that matter, I have a number of "regular" CDs that are made from old analog masters that sound quite nice -- especially the "burnt orange" boxes, from, I think, Verve.Had an enjoyable 20 minutes yesterday evening, playing the "B" side of my "Count Meets Duke" record (and it didn't cost no $27, either!).
Thanks!
There is a CD entitled "Count plays Duke". I'm on the fence regarding a purchase. I believe there is a "Count MEETS Duke (or Vice Versa) For The First Time" recording that I do own and it's great. I'm not sure though Count plays Duke as as good??
Sorry, don't know this recording "Count plays Duke."The one we both apparently have featured both the Basie and Ellington orchestras together in the studio and, I believe, was billed as the first time the two bands sat down together.
How much did you spend on cables?
