This is my third time posting about / hyping this new release, but Rob Barnett today over on Music Web International has chosen the Martin Yates / RSNO recording (on the Dutton label) of Steinberg's Violin Concerto and Symphony No. 4 ("Turksib") as an MWI "recording of the month". The only thing negative I'd say about the performances and engineering is that the violin soloist in the Concerto, Sergei Levitin is a bit aggressively overbalanced in the mix. Otherwise, this is a delightful album, although certainly not as profound as Steinberg's recently re-discovered Passion Week choral settings, which have benefitted from two outstanding recordings just in the last two years. It doesn't look as if the new Dutton album is available as a download, so you may have to order the SACD if you want it. Rob's review is a repository of stimulating information if you're interested, and I've linked to it below.
