Zoot Sims, of course, playing Moonlight in Vermont.

I love Zoot, but he's not someone I think of when the soprano saxophone is mentioned. There are (were) many wonderful soprano players like Wayne Shorter, Anthony Braxton, and Sam Rivers, but Steve Lacy has a facility with the soprano that nobody else has.
.
Love Zoot on anything but Dave Liebman is my go to for soprano. Great sound and incredible ideas.

Yo Trav. Never as far as I know , heard or heard of Dave Liebman. From this one sample he seems like the real deal. This is a very impressive short, out solo. I may be hallucinatin but his soprano sure seems large. Thanks for the info. I will be exploring him further. T456

Glad you dug it. Don't know about his instrument.
Here's something farther in. He and Richie have been dueting on this tune for close to 50 years. Love Beirach's substitute chord changes.
Check it out.

I'll check it out later. One thing for sure, he's no Kenny G. He brings a deep and highly sophisticated lyricism to a genre that is often frantic, angry and incoherent.

Liebman is a master of the soprano. I am surprised you missed him.
Geo, I don't have the encyclopedic level of knowledge and experience that some of the people here have. Since I am so picky as to what I buy and what I want to listen to I don't pay much attention to a lot of players that don't grab me. As to Liebman maybe he wasn't played much on the local jazz station. Out playing isn't something I listen too in general but his playing is spectacular. I listened to JJ's Neo and liked it. Might have to get that cd. Seems like we a good bit of overlap in taste in music. I'll keep putting up what I thing are gems. Maybe we can do a little bit to expand the interest in jazz with the new forum. I recently overheard a fairly well know jazz musician saying that they almost have to pay to play now. Sad. T456

Man you know a lot of music! I just figured you had to know Liebman. Did you see the story on Jessica Williams? Homeless and no piano. Medical bills. It's sad.
'Trane and Lacy are basically responsible for every other "modern" saxophonist - like Shorter and Liebman - playing the axe.Nowadays there are quite a few fantastic soprano players. In the vein of Zoot, the late Joe Temperley - known for his baritone/b.clar. playing - sounded great on soprano. The gold standard in the "old days" was Bechet.
Dunno that I could pick a fave, but 'Trane, Lacy, Shorter and Liebman might be my top four. Another guy who plays great on soprano is the amazing Brazilian musician Hermeto.

Lucky Thompson was an underrated saxophone player and he had a nice way of playing soprano...

You are correct, sir.Of course, Trane.
Love Lacy's sound and Hermeto is a special case(!).
Heard Jane Ira Bloom 'live' once (Fred Hersch on piano) and dug what she was doing a lot.
I love a beautiful 'sound' on soprano and the best ones, I think, are the folks who concentrate almost exclusively on that instrument, IMHO.

Last fall I heard a solo soprano saxophone composition on a friend's ipod and was very impressed by the creative performance. I had to learn who it was. It was Dave Liebman!
what is the album title of this Zoot Sims ?
