would be a great separate asylum ward. mixing it in with the classical unfocuses the view.

Follow Ups:
This isn't exactly a backwater forum, but it's not huge either so I think we need the volume of posts first of all.
And then - why jazz alone? What about World Music, Latin and all the stuff that doesn't fit into Pop and Rock?
This is kind of a "thinking musicians" forum and thinking musicians have width as well as depth. A lot of us post on both jazz and classical equally. I do for one, and I'd like to keep it that way.
okay-Jazz/World/Latin ward of the asylum. i love them all. sorting them out of the cornfield of classical is tiresome.

Not exactly a secret ballot, but perhaps it doesn't need to be. ;-)
I'm on the fence with this one. Only because this could induce a lot of heated arguments over what is or isn't "jazz"........
Soon.
Now...
Hip-Hop uses it all the time, on Max, for the Glyph-effect.
Neil DeGrass Tyson did a segment on Auto tune on Nova, which was interesting.

I'd think that IF this idea takes off, and there is a Jazz Alley forum, there would have to be some changes to the layout of some pages here. For instance, the new forum would have to be listed (and linked to) among the fora on the home page here. I remember a few years ago when I discovered that there'd been a "Classical Court" here and that one could still post to it. One of the administrators encouraged us to revive it, but without its being listed on the AA home page, it became kind of "secret knowledge" as to how to get to it. So the "revival" didn't last very long, as people reverted to their old habits, inertia too over, and the classical posts once again all went to Music Lane.So I think what would be best might be to revive the old Classical Court forum, re-title the Music forum into something more jazz oriented, and make sure the home page (as well as the forum listings at the top of other fora) would be updated to include Classical Court and the re-named Music forum. Since I'm a moderator, I could "enforce" the classical posts ending up on Classical Court until classical listeners got to a certain comfort level posting there.
Of course, now I've forgotten the URL of the old Classical Court forum, so I'd have to find it again! ;-)
EDIT: Ah! Here it is:

Yes, have 2 forums (forae?).
Jazzers aren't looking to have a secret club, or a forum that's hard to find.
either.
Unless maybe the password was swordfish.
Or, swordfishtrombones just to keep it interesting.

Wait a minute....
Oh Crap.
From the number of people who show up locally for some really great jazz players it seems to me that we are already in a secret club, much to my chagrin. And I'm talking SF. T456

My vote: yea
I agree wholeheartedly. While both jazz and classical apparently appeal to distinctly minority tastes (Just take a look at the sections devoted to these genres at your local Barnes and Noble-if they even have separate sections any more.), that's not true on a forum like AA which is hardly a reflection of the population as a whole. Music is, or at least should be, an extremely important element in the lives of participants here, not a source of background listening.
With that in mind a separate forum for each would seem to be appropriate, especially when one considers that there are many other types of music also addressed on Music Lane.
kidding
I don't know what it would mean in terms of additional administrative overhead and how cost/effort-effective it would be, but as someone who listens to a lot of classical and more than a fair amount of jazz, I think a separate jazz forum's a good idea, given the breadth of offerings in both genres. FWIW.

here is that CFL participates so much in them, though Classical has always had a pretty strong following here even predating his input.
Jazz discussions ebb and flow over the years and might flow better with a BORED member that participates more.
A separate Jazz board might make for stronger input without Classical posts almost instantaneously forcing them down the page, but no telling.
That's my riff on it anyway.

I agree. My jazz collection has grown tremendously over the last 4 years or so and I would definitely hang out there. I love classical, too, but the discussions here are mostly too esoteric for my level of knowledge and enjoyment.

and some of these geezers been here longer than me.

I think when this subject last came up, most of the replies indicated that the particular posters were still OK with jazz and classical combined, as it is now. But I'm now thinking that if I were a jazzer, I'd think that the classical posts have become too numerous, and I might want more of my own "space"?
i don't especially enjoy riffling through the mostly classical content of the music ward. i can't see how it would detract from it by separating jazz out.
Classical Hall or some other descriptive could give some elevation that classical fans would appreciate.

I could be wrong. I know from reading posts on other forums that some inmates who are at least somewhat into jazz don't like this forum. You specialists in the 4,379 recordings of each Beethoven sonata are not universally appreciated on AA :-)Maybe a forum unpolluted by pics of Yuja and just dedicated to jazz might attract enough raps to justify its existence (of course I'll still be hangin' here to check those pics out). I think it'd be worth a try. If AA can have Prop Heads why can't we have a jazz joint?

Yeah, Serena Williams. I rest my case for a jazz forum!

Hear, hear!
will just create more work for Rod + co.
It's just music. Keep it in the same room.
I don't know what you mean by *jazzer* but I listen to a lot of jazz, too.
I really haven't seen many involved discussions regarding jazz on this board and don't think it'll promote more posts because it's got a separate room.
For one thing I won't visit there.
Do you visit the hip hop forum?
I would if there was a Disco and funk forum. :D
I thought maybe they would cover some electronica stuff I was into but alas, not really.
But as a genre, maybe classical music could be the only type of music that actually we can have a discussion regarding interpretation variations.
I guess we could have a discussion regarding who's cover is the best on the Beatles' Yesterday but I'd reckon it'll get pretty stale.

What's the definition of a Triad?
It's a chord with the 6th left out.
All kinds of groovy, inside, secret stuff.
Well, until now...
I just haven't noticed except someone alerting some new artists or something or posting video. ( but probably I wasn't paying attention )
I would love to read up on Blue Note ( the old proper one! ) ,Riverside or Prestige or somesuch, artists or artistry of those from the gone era.
I would like to see someone start a thread on Hank Mobley!

Do a search on Amazon books for all 3 labels you mentioned. You'll finds a wealth of material, especially on Blue Note. And also a search for books on jazz records.
See above re Hank Mobley...by request
Do you own the album Hank by Hank Mobley? I was really into Hank Mobley but sort of moved on....if you like Hank, you should check out Tubby Hayes....a contemporary of Hank but I like him better.

I am all in on a jazz forum. The current forum is basically a classic music forum.
I for one can't fathom why there isn't a jazz forum and can't think of any downside. A hip hop forum and no jazz forum. The ultimate insult. There are a number of other forums here that get very little action so even if it wasn't popular what would be the big deal?? T456

"A hip hop forum and no jazz forum. The ultimate insult."
Every Sunday when I read my copy of The New York Times (You know, the newspaper that's always "failing."), I scratch my head in wonderment at the amount of coverage given to hip hop, while they no longer have a dedicated jazz writer and the music gets minimal coverage. It may be an elitist attitude on my part, but I find it hard to believe that the average Times reader is an avid hip hop fan...but then there are lots of things that have happened in the past couple of years that mystify me.
We tried the inverse of that about a dozen years ago with Classical Court. For whatever reason, that forum never took, and now only exists buried in the archives.
As an avid fan of both jazz and classical, I for one like the one-stop-shopping of the current arrangement.
Happy listening,
Jim
