There are many versions of this on cd. Anyone know of a good redbook version that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Some versions are panned as having very poor sound quality. I want a version with no bonus tracks. Thanks, T456

Follow Ups:
How ya doin' with Bill Evans- Tweaker456 ?
Been listening to him a bit which is not at all unusual. "I Will Say Goodbye" is very nice. I ordered up a Hallmark Moon Beams and will be very happy if the recording is as good as Portrait. See you over at Alley. We finally get some respect!

how many BE titles are avail on that Hallmark label?
Keep me posted as you acquire them.
Those Keepnews editions are not bad. I like that particular series for the liner notes, alone.
Hope this is helpful ?
to play the original tracks in the right order?

Or why can't the people who oversee these reissues simply put the bonus tracks after the original program, so that doesn't have to be done? (See the other post about a reissue where this was actually done.)
That's a good idea shuretyguy, putting them at the end. That actually has the advantage of letting one use the pause button at the real end so as not to have to hear the servo noise when the player stops. T456

The Keepnews Edition would be the safest bet pricewise. I know you said no bonuses, but they're the last tracks so you can always stop the player after playing the main program.
I feel a bit guilty not buying Orrin's edition. I gave him a taxi ride a long while back and had a great conversation with him. Jazz heaven for him now. T456

Tweaker456-
Big Bill Evans freak here. I own his entire catalog on CD, both original and remasters, for bonus tracks.
Which edition is considered a poor recording?
Anyway, seek out the original CD on Riverside from 1986/87. Start there.

One person on Amazon thought this was the worst cd he had ever heard in terms of recording quality. IMO it's the people who don't love Bill Evans that are the freaks. Just sayin'. Do you like Warren Bernhardt?? I believe he studied with Evans. T456

T456-
I did check my remaster of this Bill Evans classic and it was from 1999
mini-lp Japan import edition. This copy may be the 1st JVC K2 coding as well?
A few years later in 2001, those U.S.A. "red" cover K2 editions hit the market. Between the CD, SACD, mini-lp CD, SHM-CD/SACD editions, it all gets very confusing, very quickly.
Some of Bill Evans titles were remasters of the OJC editions in 2011 and 2013 too.
Tweaker456
Yes, I do enjoy Warren Bernhardt. His drummer is the outstanding Peter Erskine ( a master of the brushes)!
Another thought;
some titles have been re-mastered so many times, that, there is bound to be a "bad" issue. As much as I enjoy and collect Japan imports, the 2008 issue, may be a one-off in terms of poor quality.
ICE Magazine from the 90's / early 2000's wrote an article way back then, talking about the "remaster craze". Specifically, the writer talked about any title , any genre, could be remastered every 4 years due to changing technology. As we now can look back- this is true. Between the USA, UK and Japan, some albums or titles have been remastered every 4 years?
TY- Tweaker456
this album, like so many Jazz classics, has been re-mastered to death.
There are too many copies, if you ask me.
I will have to check my remastered copy for the specific year.
🙄
Yes, the OJC version. After that are the re-masters from DCC and JVC (K2 editions). Actually, the remasters are not bad at all, well done. I enjoy the bonus tracks too.
...IMO. The DCC edition was great, I had one and stupidly damaged it. For a redbook format I ended up having the Japanese mini-LP Digital K2 from the late '90s and Keepnews versions. Both are different, but very good to my ears. The latest Japanese single layered SACD is also very good.
erik-
what are the catalog# / matrix # on the newest Japan single-layer SACD?
Where did you purchase?

Is cdjapan easy to transact ?
I've never had a problem with them. Very reliable with great customer service.
Pretty easy to set up an account? Any issues w/ shipping to U.S.A. ?
As easy as it gets. Never had any issues with their shipping either.
How ya doin' Twealer456 ?
I'm still above ground and recovering from the Kenny G photo. Haven't got the Hallmark non "bonus" track Bill Evans Portrait cd yet. Thanks for asking. Vote early and vote often. T456

Keep me posted.
I have listened to the Hallmark Original Recording of Portrait in Jazz by Evans. I bought this because it was of central importance to someone I know who is into jazz piano in a big way with similar taste. Evan's playing on this is more aggressive than any other recording I have of his. Up till now I chose the darkest and most lyrical of his recordings from my perception and sampling. Very fine music throughout. As to the recording itself it seems free of hiss with the possible exception of the beginning of Some Day My Princess Will Come, not. Very very quiet background. It is almost mono like in nature. The piano is large, upfront with very little side to side motion. Drummer pretty quiet and also in the center. The bass is to the right. Everything stays the same throughout the whole disk. I'd say a somewhat unusual recording but very good. No "bonus" tracks. A very pure listening experience. T456

Much Thanks! for the follow up- Tweaker456
what is the year, catalog# or matrix # of this disc?
IME, Bill Evans certainly mastered (no pun) the Piano Trio, sets a very high standard.
Only one Hallmark that I can see. Here it is for $6.80. 713662 on the case.

Very interesting- T456.
Much Thanks! Tweaker,
I am not familiar w/ this Hallmark label? That is the reason I asked about it and a catalog/matrix # ?
Could be a knock-off label like "Jazz Heritage"?
TY- erik
You can get a used copy of the 20 bit mastering CD on Amazon for $6.87. I have this and the sound quality is quite good.
Your suggestion is probably a better recording than the one I just bought but I wanted only the original tunes without any bonus tracks. It's amazing how many issues there are of this one recording. The Hallmark label recording is the only one I could find after some more research that had only the original 9 tunes. Thanks, T456

I guess I didn't really pay attention to the no extra tracks portion of your request even though I empathize with you on that point. Too often reissues upset the flow of an original release by inserting the extra tracks in places they shouldn't be as is certainly the case with the suggestion I made. I suppose this is intended to add value, but all too often it's just disruptive.
Very disruptive. I consider it blasphemy. I'm actually considering going through some of my discs to see if there are non bonus track alternatives. I really strongly dislike them. T456

This is, of course, the result of the maximum playing time of a CD being greater then that of an LP. For some reason the less discriminating believe that every possible minute available has to contain something or they are not getting value. It's as if one had a book that runs to 500 pages but they have to print 800 simply because they can! Presumably in this analogy those extra 300 pages would consist of the author's crossings out :-)
So we suffer alternative takes or other studio garbage that the original producer has had the wisdom to reject. Offhand I can only think of one alternative take on a CD that adds much to my former knowledge of the piece. Mostly at the very best they are listen to once and never again. Sometimes they are not even complete takes e.g. the band starts then it all falls apart after a minute and they stop. What is the value to the listener in that?
There is also the issue of the original sequence of tracks which may have required some thought on the producer's behalf. Placing alternative takes in the midst of this is indeed blasphemy.
