...before the disappointing epoch of "Smooth Jazz" really took off in the mid-70's, and before he began to sing, Benson put out a few fine, mellow jazz albums on CTI. This and "White Rabbit" in 1972 are the best IMO. Hard to miss with Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette, and Rudy vanGelder putting you through the paces...
You gotta forgive Creed Taylor and look for the good. He was once so disparaged that my local EllPeeHut kept CTI LP's in a box under the bins and gave me a handful I'd picked out for free, just to be rid of them. Thanks, snobs!
Follow Ups:
Nice! mr. bear
smooth-cti, michael franks. bill evans, mjq, etc.
smoov-late bob james, larry carlton, lee ritenhour, benson after on broadway (actually a very good vocal, he should have stopped there). he's back to guitar playing more thankfully.

Been picking up some CTI LPs lately, and have found them to be pretty darn fine as a rule, in that 70s sort of way. Just played California Concert, including GB on guitar. Very nice. What a line up. S Turrentine, F Hubbard, R Carter, Cobham, Airto, H Laws, etc.
A couple other nice recent CTI finds: Benson & Farrell and Deodato's Prelude.
Personal favorite CTI LP: Milt Jackson's Sunflower.
Favorite GB LPs: Breezin' and In Flight. Not CTI, but very well done.
I used to have a few of those CTI albums. I was especially fond of Benson's "White Rabbit".
This is one of my favorite album covers ever.
The music production is sounding a bit dated now, IMHO.
I saw Mr. Benson several times at the Jazz workshop in Boston in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was a mainstream jazz guitar player then and I really enjoyed his music and heard him every time he was in Boston. There are some records from this period that you can find; but you will have to search. Once he started recording for Creed Taylor I wished him well because he was going to be making much more money and playing in larger establishments that the Jazz Workshop.

I'm a baritone fan and Ronny is right up there with 'em all for me!
George is fantastic whatever he does.
