Finally filling this hole in my US travel experience. Where's the best music?

I think she's still doing that regularly. Get there an hour early for a seat at the bar--maybe. Take some take out food in with you.
Snug Harbor should be a must.
Maple Leaf bar in Carrollton several nights each week
Le Bon Temps Roulé in Uptown Thursday nights usually has the Soul Rebels from 11 pm - brass band meets hip hop
Agree with DBA & Frenchmen Street generally

Of course I can always use google and tripadvisor, but people here freely contribute all kinds of extra useful stuff, and it's appreciated.
Not quite as touristy.'The Spotted Cat Music Club' is one of my favorites. But be prepared to stand unless you get there early.
'Snug Harbor' is also usually good, but a bit more pricey.

tune into wwoz via online stream.
Try streaming WWOZ. Yeah, they have a relatively low bit rate, but they frequently air a pretty detailed music calendar that'll help you decide what places you might want to visit.
One of my favorites is DBA. Grab a beer, listen to a set or two, and move on to the next joint. One of my best music experiences was there - a guitar, tuba and washboard (that would be Washboard Chaz). People were dancing all over the place.
...the only club I've been to there is Tipitina's - it's more blues/jazz/rock club with acts like Trombone Shorty and St. Paul and the Broken Bones, but it was terrific.
