I have the SACD/CD RCA set. It is in my opinion one of the truly great piano recordings

Well, I just listened to the third and fourth scherzos on the SACD, and -- there is a noticeable difference. The third sounds like the microphones are very close. You can here all sorts of extraneous noises, key clicks and even Rubinstein breathing and moving. The fourth not only has a slightly lower volume level, but it sounds like the microphones were moved further away from the piano.
Better get John Marks on the case!
We're 'Audiophiles', we pay extra for that!
Unless the Germans tried to airbrush-out the noises, which would explain the patches of fluctuating volume, but no, I've had reel to reels and it sounds like a few patches of crunchy tape.
In any case, great set. I'm a bit OD'd on the Improptus any, and it's not as if there aren't other good performances of the Scherzi.
Leaving the obsessiveness behind, I listened to the Nocturnes last night accompanied with the pitter patter of gentle rain outside. It was very Windham Hill.
And once again, that slow mov't to the 3rd Sonata! I dare say that its air of intimacy rivals that of the Hammerklavier's.
Thanks, was debating about returning the set to ebay seller, but will keep.
