I've long ago lost any interest in consumption of alcohol. I just have no interest to do to my body what alcohol in excess does. I also deplore the false idea that excessive alcohol consumption somehow constitutes a heroic act. Joining the armed forces to defend your country, or running into a burning building to save a life - those constitute heroism. Getting drunk? Nope.
That said, I don't avoid alcohol completely. Used as an adjunct to food, it enhances a meal. And, I think the medical evidence shows a beneficial effect in tiny quantities. Thus, a small glass of wine with a weekend dinner, or a glass of quality beer [quality - to make it worth your while] on a summer weekend after dinner, complete the meal.
We've just gotten thru our summer of 2015. In July at a Sunday party in a backyard, the sun was out and the temperature was just warm enough, without for a change, Chicago humidity. Conviviality reigned, so I decided to sample a glass of the fresh micro brew that my friend had generously bought. It was quite delicious. I was wrapped up in conversation, carried away on the wave of a lively exchange of ideas, and I somehow drank a second glass.
It's so sneaky. I haven't consumed 2 glasses of beer - or any alcohol - in decades. Here I was, going for a third. By about the third of the way thru that third glass of micro brew, the effect began to make itself known. The feeling of warmth; the slight but noticeable pleasant feeling of euphoria spread thru me.
What happened next is why I'm relating the story here and wasting your time.
I've noticed that as people become intoxicated, a familiar pattern emerges. Some people become combative and/or violent. Some become talkative and sociable. Many lose fears and inhibitions. Libido takes hold.
As the euphoria pleasantly filled my consciousness, I found myself overcome by a desire-----for music. Music. Not fighting. Not talking. Not jumping or dancing or intimacy. Music. Hearing music. That's all wanted. And, I really, really wanted it.
Curious.
And, the impulse grew. It grew in intensity. It grew so much that I found myself backing away from the group that I was talking with and finding some corner. - just so I could recreate some music in my mind. I just had to hear the Schubert Death and the Maiden quartet. I just had to hear some chamber music. I was seriously considering leaving the party.
I began to hum the Schubert music, until one of the wives shouted "Hey - you OK over there?"
Well, I returned to the group. Of course, I wasn't going to consume the rest of the third glass of beer - this was already quite enough. Eventually, the effect dissipated. But, I was left with a new view of facet of the possibilities of the human brain that I hadn't quite experienced before. This is your brain on music.
Any one else have any similar close encounters?

Creepy scary creepy scary creepy scary.
Those of you who like Jiminy and think you're friends - take a look at how he's stalking me.
And, all of those creepy clown photos --- you'd better think about him again.

I don't know what it is? Do you know?
Does anyone know?
I tried singing those notes that Troll JDaniels typed out, but it didn't sound like anything. So, then I played it on a keyboard. Still nonsense.
I think Jiminy Daniels missed at whatever melody or whatever he was trying to type out. Who knows?
But, why do I have to identify anything? Exactly why am I being tested? Will I win a million dollars if I pass? What will it prove?
And, what does that have to do with the topic of this thread? Actually, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Jiminy's trolling, and obviously trying to hijack anything I post. That's pretty much the definition of a troll.
If anyone knows what melody or whatever Jiminy's trolling about, for goodness sakes, tell him and shut the fool up. Cause, trolls such as he don't stop. That creepy, scary clown picture - that's not a joke. That's creepy Jiminy - FOR REAL.

As you said about Beethoven's 4th (though it's not the 4th):"[Is the 4th] less well known to the classical listener? NO. You're equating popularity with familiarity. And, even then, really, the WHOLE NINE are so popular - TO CLASSICAL LISTENERS, not motorcycle driving Jesse James - that's it's absurd to make much distinction. They're not "less well known" to the classical music listening audience. It's less well known, if known at all, to the typical Red Bull guzzling millenial."

So, let's see. My inability to sight read well ---PROVES that Beethoven's symphonies are "less well known"?????
ROTFLMAO
And, why're you trolling with this on a thread about alcohol and music? Hmmmm? You creepy clown TROLL.

It was one simple melody for the right hand. Even the outlines should have given it away.
Two decades of study and you can't hammer out a simple melody in C major??
Explains a lot.
Good bye Mr. James.
I once thought that I could drink it as fast as they could make it. It took a few years to disabuse myself of that idea. Now I rarely drink anything - maybe some handcrafted whiskies (whiskeys) in small amounts.
Yep - it's the story of my life - thanks for posting it!
.
I like about a full glass of wine and that is it. It calms me and keeps me in my chair. For concerts, I notice it is far better to remain sober.
But, interesting tale even if I can't personally relate to it.
yes, beer can do that to you.better yet, have 18 beers and a few cigars, then you have my Saturday.
oh, I also listen to music at the same time!
:)
actually what I think you experienced was one of those bliss moments, it only comes through abstinence of those things. I abstain from marijuana for sometimes years at a time and the next time I do indulge I can tell you the mystical experiences I have are well worth it.
The bliss moments are rare, there are many eastern schools of thought which state you can reach that state and stay there with proper undertaking, however I always find the so called "coming back down" to be rather welcome for what it is worth. I do kiss the ground and thank god I have sanity left after it is all over. It also seems you perhaps had some sort of psychotic experience or break which would probably be related to the fact that you abstain from alcohol. If you were in the corner singing to yourself, perhaps you should stay away from alcohol. I feel that same way about LSD, if I ever took that again I would be either dead or locked up in an insane asylum.

Tobacco seems to bring a certain "clarity of thought" to those who are inclined to use it. Just one of the many reasons why I've always avoided it like the plague...
Even more intense reaction. Worth a try now and then, I find.
because what you describe is something I crave and indulge in frequently. Live a little...
