In Reply to: RE: Love records stores with "no room for Classical." But Grumiaux's Bach.... posted by jdaniel@jps.net on October 29, 2015 at 18:53:42
Martzy was a fine violinist, but her LPs are so high-priced mainly due to their rarity. That, in turn, is mainly due to her reluctance to make them and her refusal to allow them to be reissued. If you mention her to a professional violinist, you may get little more than a quizzical look.
While I'm a big fan of the Szeryng set, which I've had since childhood, and the Grumiaux set as well, my go-to man for the solo sonatas and partitas is Nathan Milstein, 50s mono on Capitol or late 60s stereo on DG.

I always loved the Grumiaux, especially, versus the current players. Then I got the Milstein and changed my mind.
I done side by side comparisons a couple of times and always choice Milstein.
He ironically is afforded a better sense of hall than Grumiaux, and Szeryng gets my toe tapping in a way that Grumiaux does not, even though Szeryng is a bit slower overall.
I had a DGG Italy box set of the Milstein but sold it. Will definitely give it another listen when I stumble across a set again. Milstein happens to be Norman Lebrecht's favorite as well.
His colorful way with music history OTOH....
