While the final scene is clearly intended to depict the slaughter of the innocents, I have a friend who was 'raised by the Sisters'--thirteen years in Catholic schools---who describes them as 'vicious, sadistic old bats'. He finds the final scene of the Carmelites 'strangely satisfying'.

I will not argue or defend that except to say your friend's comments might only apply to a few, and evidence is coming out now about abuse in a orphanage run by some sadistic Aussie nuns being among those few. But I taught at a Catholic school for many years and the nuns there were lovely and were certainly not guillotine candidates!
But Poulenc was a staunch Catholic so his attitude as displayed in his opera is understandable.
