As a child, I attended a famous Carnegie Hall recital by Soviet violinist Leonid Kogan that was picketed and interrupted by a smoke bomb that forced them to clear the balcony. These were anti-Soviet Union protesters, not really anti-Kogan protesters.
However, if Twitter had been around in those days, the hard line pro-Soviet Kogan would no doubt have had very little opportunity to play in the US. His close personal and artistic relationship with Rostropovich soured over these political issues.
Sadly, we're returning to the cold war environment, and I predict anyone who expresses support for Putin will begin to encounter hostility here. Valery Gergiev is also a strong Putin supporter and has been rewarded with immense sums of money. I've read that he too is inspiring protests from the Ukrainian community.
