Okay, folks. If you're into hi-res classical music downloads, HDTracks has one for you (I'm downloading it while composing this message, and at my Slowski speed it'll be a while). Daniel Barenboim's new Beethoven Symphony cycle with his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra (5 Decca CDs) is available as a 24/96 download for $20.98.
I don't know how everyone feels about Barenboim, but I'm a groupie. I really liked his previous Beethoven set, and I quite enjoy his DVDs of the complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas and the Piano Concertos.
Anyway, just thought I'd share the news. Mine should finish downloading sometime tomorrow...

10 bucks at Amazon (see link), but it's not HiRez.
I've listened to a bit of it (I had a coupon that was about to expire, and was curious - it ended up costing me $6). I'm rather underwhelmed, and I really loved his Teldec set (it is perhaps my favorite modern, large scale set). The West Eastern Divan Orchestra may be important politically, and it's important to support the cause of Israeli-Arab dialogue and cooperation, but it's not the Berlin Staatskapelle.
I had Barenboim's previous Beethoven cycle with the Berlin Staatskapelle on DVD-Audio, which AFAIR was also 24/96. Since I'm not on Barenboim's wavelength most of the time, I'm not sure I'm up for another Barenboim Beethoven cycle, but this sure seems like a incredible price - I'm tempted.
The bottom line in my marathon debate below with David Smith (literally -- you can read his very last comment and skip the rest, it's pretty boring) is that if you want to pay less than 99 cents per track, you are morally bankrupt (though you may end up OK financially).
I think downloads are going to become sinfully inexpensive -- even high-rez ones like this.
I said if $.99 is TOO MUCH (for any music) then there isn't a price that will satisfy you. Do the math, better yet propose some math to me that makes sense to you.
But !!! what is the actual cost to download this set.??
I am talking about the cost of downloading.
Do you mean the proportion of hard disk space needed to store the files? That would be miniscule - storage is cheap nowadays.
With his young orchestra he may not be channeling his inner Furtwangler with this set.
