I unfortunately don't know which Jazz labels to trust for her music. Collecting vinyl was easy, I knew which of the original pressings to look for. There was an album years back "Clap hands here comes Charlie" that was pretty well reviewed, did it ever make it to a first rate digital release SACD or CD? I'm open to other releases also, can someone make some suggestions? Thanks

As you probably know, Ella recorded for Decca, Verve, Pablo, and for a
while for Capitol. The good stuff is on the first 3 labels. As a
major Ella fan, I do not care how good the mastering is, it's the music
that matters. That said, Classic Records released CD versions of
"Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie" and "Let No Man Write My Epitaph" which
are simply superb. There are also XRCD versions of the duets that she
did with Joe Pass, the first volume of which is exquisite.
Her other true masterpiece, the Cole Porter Songbook, has been issued
only by Verve/Universal and I find it very acceptable. There is also
available many vinyl releases of her recordings at ridiculous prices,
but I cannot speak to those because I haven't done vinyl for over 20
years.
There is also a gold cd version of her Verve recordings with Louis
Armstrong, but I don't know which label it's on. A search on Amazon
should yield appropriate info.

A big yes! for Cole Porter Songbooks, and Sings the Duke Ellington Songbook set. Ella and Louis SACD is swell, although many of the tracks are available on other discs and the sound on the SACD isn't the end all to be all, as you get different perspectives listening to different versions. Anyone who has a good size Ella collection has multiple versions of her songs (many in mono) on LP and disc. I look forward to how Analogue Production mixes the SACD of Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie. It's often said the best things in life are free, and while the Ella discs aren't free, they are among the best things in life and many are bargains. Be sure to acquire some of Ella's live recordings, the Rome and Berlin concerts are always favorites.

The plain-vanilla Polygram CD set is excellent. You just have to might very slight allowances for her mellow-ish vocal mic and the fact that the string bass is a bit tubby, but only when measured against the best.
I found the DCC gold remastering actually to be less good, in that it just sharpened the focus to the point that the tape hiss was to me a major irritant. No way it is worth $399.00 used! (Or even $175.00)
I link to the amazon.com new set; used singles of the previous packaging on eBay are (Vol. I and Vol. II in separate jewel boxes) are ridiculously cheap: $3.99 up.
