I see new CDs from "Russian Disc" are out there again. I may be mistaken, but they seemed to have had disappeared for quite some time. When I tried to find this CD about a year ago, it was slim pickings, and I paid a good price for about the only one I could find. Go to Amazon. This symphony, in particular, is superb. Considered Lyatoshinsky's best.

I'd listened to one of his symphonies on Marco Polo a long time ago. May've even been the 3rd. The music wasn't just bad, it struck me as high school awful. I recall him following some cresendo build up with an aimless passage for flute, which he then alternated with responses from the orchestra, which ended with a trill on the flute.
What the hell was that?, I thought. This is crap.
Anyway, I'll try to give him another chance, but he just didn't strike me as top drawer.
Top drawer? Well, he's not up there with Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, or Brahms, but who is?I like most symphonists of the 20th century, including Lyatoshynsky. Lots of people don't, but as I said, the 3rd is probably his best. I don't know for sure, but a lot of those Marco Polo performances leave a great deal to be desired. What may sound deadly on MC. can seem like a different piece of music with a better orchestra and conductor. I have definitely found that out with some other Maro Polo discs when I have later acquired a different performance of the same work.

I think I must have gotten this from Berkshire Record Outlet ages ago.The music is a bit too Scriabinesque for my taste. I might enjoy it more if the sound weren't so strident.
EDIT: the music is more interesting on a second listening, but I really wish I could boost the bass to make the sound more palatable. The downside of not having any tone controls.

I have the set of Lyatoshinsky symphonies conducted by Kuchar with the Ukrainian State Orchestra on Marco Polo. I remember liking the music but thought that better performers could make more of the music (I haven't played them in a while). Have you heard any of the Kuchar's and, if so, how do they compare with this Russian Disc? Thanks!
I haven't heard the Marco Polo series. I think I have two of the symphonies (4 & 5) on the cpo label, where the sound may be a bit better, but this one is fine. Yea, many of the performances on those old Marco Polo discs leave much to be desired. Too bad, since the material was often so interesting.
