Quite a show! This #3 of the 4 ring operas was the most successful so far. "The machine" did not act up, the projections were beautiful and effective and the acting and singing were as good as it gets these days. Of course, the hero of the hour was Jay Hunter Morris, a heldentenor from Paris, Texas(!) who took over this ridiculously hard role on two weeks notice. Much bacon was saved at the Met. I still can't believe the last 35 minute duet between Debra Voight and Morris. As a retired singer, it just didn't compute that these two could do this. Wow!
Anybody else see it?

You mention machines & projection, artifacts of the Valencia Ring out on video. In that Ring Die Walkure came across to us as the most successful.
Lucky you to have experienced a live performance of Wagnerian opera.

I don't know anything about the Valencia Ring so no comment. It would surprise me if the MET Live in HD is not broadcast in Australia, assuming that's where you are. I've seen all three Ring operas so far and plan on seeing the last one in February, on screen in a movie house, live. This Ring is under the direction of Robert Lapage, formerly with Cirque du Soleil.

But even if it was across the street I would not go because the audio systems in just about every theater I've ever been in is pretty bad. I did not read your header carefully enough before and made the incorrect assumption you had actually been at the MET. Good you enjoyed the broadcast - maybe the theater yopu attended has a better audio system than the ones I've had the misfortune to endure.
I'll wait for it to come out on Blu Ray and, if it gets a good review, might buy it. However I've already got 2 sets of the Ring on BD, two on DVD and the Solti set on CD so I'm in no hurry to buy any more. I love Wagner but there is a lot of other glorious music out there to also love.
Please do not misinterpret. This is not meant to be negative about the MET production or your enjoyment of it at the theater.

My theater is 80 miles away. No biggie.
The point that I did not make strongly enough is that the performance is LIVE. Things can happen (no editing!) and sometimes do. This is the frisson of live performance that I enjoy plus, you get live interviews during the intermissions that include a lot of backstage action, sets moving, stuff getting repaired and those interviews with the principals, conductor, costumers, director, insight into the technical aspects, ie. the 3D Forest Bird they invented(!).
The sound is O.K.+, not great but endurable for what you get to see. Sorry yours is unacceptable.
Upside is you get to preview the DVD in it's raw state. But, I hear you about Wagner. Too much can be a little too much. Next up is a Glass opera on 11/19. I'm nervous.
Cheers, my opera friend from down under.

The MET has its own high tech production, different from Valencia.
