Who?
Matt was head of the Jazz Studies dept at Wayne State University for many years, including my time there as a student. Most of what I know about jazz theory and harmony, composition, and arranging--I learned it all from him. Columnist and author Mitch Albom wrote a wonderful tribute to Matt (and not his first) in today's Detroit Free Press. I can vouch for the authenticity of many of the stories told there...Mitch captures Matt's essence here beatifully. So long my friend.

WSU has had some great faculty over the years
For a long time, I think Wayne's (and to a lesser extent Western's) jazz program was the only game worth playing in the state of Michigan. Lately however, Rodney Whitaker and company have been building a mighty fine program at Michigan State. Heard their big band at the jazz fest this year and they were really, really good. Some new healthy competition can only be good for the local scene...at least in terms of the caliber of music being played. Wayne's A bands still sounds great too under the leadership of Chris Collins.

RIP.
