Does anyone recognize the hall and circumstances? Maybe the European tour in 1989? A lot of uniformed youth in the audience close up.I stumbled upon this clip of the end of B5. Never mentioned here in my recollection.
Yes, it is the 80's Clevelanders, the orchestra as I heard them when living in Clev. I easily recognize many players. Michael Sachs is prinicipal trumpet and thus it's 1988-9 (Adelstein retired). Strong finish with great precision.

The final movement of his Telarc Beethoven Nine is also on YouTube.......... IMO, the best B-9 performance on commercial recording by the Cleveland Orchestra...........
There might be better interpretations- Dohnanyi is a tad "reserved" and "four square" with the finale (but still miles better than FWM)....... But aside from the Szell performance, you'll won't hear a B-9 that's better played. (The is at the end of the Adelstein era. "Video" clip is audio only.)
I wasted, no enjoyed the yt's from him, and one of them is those recorded for the clev players blog, where he repeats the truth that the players listen to each other and come from a chamber music perspective.
Todd, didn't you think that the posted video showed a great intensity? I like fast Beethoven, not slower, like you.

From a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a 7........ It's easily the best interpretation of this work I've heard from a commercial CO recording.

I generally like my Beethoven a little on the "slow" side, but the final movement of the B-9 runs the gamut...... Except for the final "Maestoso" (which should be powerful and relatively slow), the tempos in the final movement are not so critical, as much as the "drama" that develops. (I've heard a great "slow" finale by Kurt Masur, I've heard great "fast" finales by Karajan and Ashkenazy...... Link is IMO the best live B-9 performance on YouTube.)
