The orchestra was at the start of a tour in the Northeastern U.S. and Canada, when the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear crisis hit...... There was discussion of the ensemble canceling the tour....... But figured a show of resolve would bring hope to the devastating situation at home........

given what's going on back at home. I know that at least some people must have gone back, as a friend of mine was asked to sub on e flat clarinet at the last minute for their concert here in Washington. I admire them and wish them the best.
I cannot speak for others, but whenever musical performers used to big stages are willing to perform at a modest venue like an elementary school, possibly exposing a group of children to a type of music they've maybe heard for the very first time, such potential impact on the lives of a few of those children could be a life-changing experience. And throw in the dire crisis in these performers' home country, the fact they would still go out of their way to perform under such dire circumstances, with almost no fanfare, what I can put into words could never do them justice.
