Pianist Oxana Shevchenko, 24-year-old Winner of the 2010 Scottish International Piano Competition in September 2010. The CD above looks as if it's already available in the UK (Gramophone Editor's Choice) and will be available in the US next month. Repertoire is a bit unusual, including the Liszt/Busoni "Marriage of Figaro Fantasy" rather than the "Don Juan Fantasy", as well as the Mozart Allegro, K. 400, plus some Shostakovitch Preludes (and one Prelude and Fugue from Op. 87) - I could do without the Shostakovitch myself. The YT video performance of Ravel's "La Valse" below seems pretty darn good from what I can tell.

Isn't this just like pop music? You have to be a babe to get a record contract, these days.
No more Patty Smiths, sadly.
I think it's a pity and it's not fair.

If you watch nothing else, watch 2:03 to 2:25 of the linked clip...........
As long as it does not include the opera singers! The last thing I want to see is a beached whale warbling beside a piano.

Not so fast. The most beautiful woman it has ever been my privilege to know personally is a professional opera singer.
Happy listening,

Yeah, they usually start out looking like that as teenagers. But then .... this happens.
Christine Brewer has one of the most beautiful voices ever, but please do not make me look at her in lingerie.

they could have saved a bundle on Jabba the Hut's FX.
Not safe for work:

By the way, Ms. Palmour was 50 when she performed that role. They don't all have to turn out badly.
Happy listening,

Look at the Catherine Malfitano Dance of the Seven Veils from Berlin, 1990. I'm not posting the link here as it is definitely NSFW, but you can find it easily on YouTube by searching for Malfitano and Salome. It's been flagged for nudity (which although technically true, is stupid), so you need to sign in to see it.
Now it's gotten to the point that anybody who wins some local competition gets a recording deal -- if they are pretty enough. No wonder classical music as a genre is in such a shambles. Audiences/customers are confronted with hundreds of new artists per year, all of whom are promoted as if they were not only the best ever musician, but also the sexiest.
Please tell me why the marketing departments of these record labels always show women swooning and day dreaming, with a vapid expression on their faces. It's really quite perplexing to me, as it actually communicates a message that is the antithesis of musical competence.

It seems like what's promoted isn't necessarily the best talent period, but the "best" talent with attractiveness attached..........
I mean, it would be nice to see an attractive woman violinist perform at a level of a Joseph Lendvay, but I guess what matters is a specific listener's priorities.......... [-;
I've always thought Ayako Uehara had the chops, but is not exactly Julia Fischer when it comes to attractiveness......... The only attractive woman musician who really blows me away with incredible chops is not a classical musician, but a rock bassist named Gabriela Vega. (People have asked me if the pic below was touched up or enhanced in any way, and the answer is "no"....... )

But I'm a lot less worried about day dreaming and vapid expressions than I am about electronic virtual reality systems - YMMV! :-)
Actually, if you watched the video, you'll note that, comparatively speaking, Oxana is pretty stoic as a player - I didn't see any swooning, or "looking to heaven for inspiration", or shaking jowls on the cadential chords. :-)
There you go, making fun of Paderewski. He'd never get a gig in today's market.

LOL! I think a lot of pianists associate shaking jowls with how PROFOUND they think they're being! I often notice it when I'm watching pianists "place" the final chord in the piece. :-)
Good one! According to MDT this has been available in GB since last June. I must have missed it (I scour the new releases at MDT religiously).
You are providing a valuable service. Someone needs to keep finding the new generation of babe musicians before the current ones fade from babedom.
give me Helene any day.
The second movement was sublime.
