...at Symphony he turned in (out?) a great Tchaikovsky Fourth, with an orchestra whose recording history with that work already is stellar. Dozens -- or more-- phrases were shaped, that I had only heard before as note-spinning. A grand performance in the grand Thirties tradition, definitely not "international" in style.Tomorrow night I'll be able to listen again, and also get the Bartok Second Piano Concerto and more under my belt.
Follow Ups:
at his conducting of Brahms 4 at LA Phil this year. He apparently let the orchestra do what they please, and the orchestra took the slack.Dohnanyi is great conductor, but very musician has ups and downs that are unpredictable.
Todd K and I were in Cleveland and heard him as music director there.I never felt he was bad and the Clevelanders got along with him and made good music and records. I heard him over 25 times live. One of his best was a fiery Mahler 1st in 89. But it's true that sometimes, one felt after the concert as not fully satisfied.
I recall the Schumann 2nd in 2000 before his collaboration with M. Pollini in the Brahms 2nd pc, which was much better. Not very together, wandering, but the Brahms was OK.
.
and he did a very good 5th and Walpurgisnacht in Cleveland (live).
You should have heard him as a youngster. CVD was a frequent guest conductor of the Munich Philharmonic during the 60's when I lived there, and I made a point to hear him every time. He was a real firebrand and an original. No so anymore.
Thanks for your information.
Didn't do much for me this year with his Brahams 1 & 3. I had tix to 2 & 4 and chose to donate them back.Did see an excellent Tchaikovsky 4 with the young conductor Stephane Deneve. I think he may be one to watch for.
And I thought when with Cleveland, Brahms was maybe CVD's best composer.... I've always recommended his Brahms One on recording.
Disappointing is too strong for my expereince with the Brahms 1 & 3... not satisfyng is probably more accurate.I don't know what it is, maybe they (the L.A. Phil) just don't mesh as well with CVD as with most other conductors or maybe there's something in his style that I don't vibe with but I've yet to hear them together and enjoy it or feel that the music has really been brought to life (something I experience regularly with the orchestra and other conductors). Oddly enough my other most disappointing concert was when Franz Welser Most conducted them a couple of years ago.
he was better during my own visits to Severance Hall vs. some of his recordings. My view is not that negative. I have many of his live concerts taped by Nak onto metal tape in my collection.
