"Trouble is, getting rid of the wife may leave you without a house to put the 1.7s in. :-(("IMO he should stand his ground, and not yield to any such demands (from wife or others) and continue to enjoy listening to his system as it exists, in the space it currently occupies.
The most he could lose his half the value of their house. If his wife be so miserable, not allowing him this little satisfaction she isn't worth having.
If he loses 1/2 the value of their house, so would she. That should give her second thoughts. The idea that I would shop around for some alternate speakers so that she can re-vamp their living room is ludicrous.
