Herbie Hancock's "Gershwin's World". Herbie plays 14 Gershwin classics including a spine tingling rendition of "Summertime"; sung by none other than Joni Mitchell. In fact Joni is so good on this one cut, I'd put her up against any of Diana Krall's works.
Also one of the best recorded disc I've heard in a long, long time- great depth, solid bass and superb imaging.
Great for late evening listening ; )
Follow Ups:
Always nice to hear new-to-me music that's loved by others.
"Knowing what you don't know is, in a sense, omniscience"
In that same vein, Herbie Hancock made a 2008 album that included tributes to Joni Michell that included her singing "The Tea Leaf Phophecy". Norah Jones does "Court and Spark" and Tina Turner does a world class rendition of "Edith and the Kingpin" all on the same album entitled "River: The Joni Letters". This album won the 2008 Grammy for the best Album of the Year. This album truly amazes through Magnepan 3.6 and the Tina Turner performance is one for the ages High End sound quality. Beautiful piano for both sound and technique.
Introducing this category is a great addition to the Asylum.
Forgot about that one! I remember watching the Grammy's that year and watching the surprised look on Herbie's face when they announced the award.
Will grab it soon ;)
Also best wishes to Joni Mitchell who remains in the hospital.
None could be my album of the month no matter how well performed or recorded, because the musical genres represented do not interest me.
E.g., it might be titled the "Jazz Album of the Month" or some such thing. I'd sooner confess to some crime than be forced to listen to the "Recommended Album of the Month" or any of the other suggestions. In that vein it has been well established that kids who tend to hang out in certain places can be chased away by playing classical music.
and respect that response.
I'd be more than grateful if you could recommend a great classical recording that shines above the rest when heard through Maggies.
Thank you for you kind understanding and reply. I've been scratching my head trying to provide a classical recommendation ever since reading it.
Should I provide a classical music recommendation I feel I would encounter the same problem I experienced with your initial recommendation. I can't provide one release that would meet the necessary criterion. Opera buffs would need to be considered, then there are those who want chamber music, orchestral music, concerto (soloist: violin, piano etc.) with orchestral accompaniment, sonatas a soloist alone, and or included in a 'duo', etc., etc. Then there are recordings which feature 'original' instruments and performance practice vs. contemporary or modern playing practice. Often featured recordings include re-release in up-to-date re-mastered sound of older and 'classic' classical recordings. The best I can do is to offer a recommendation to this website: http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/.
Each week they come up with recommendations, many of which provide listening samples plus video interviews with the artists and story behind the actual making making of the recording. For those willing to make the investment (about $100.!), I've been listening to a box containing 41 CD re-releases of classic recordings in the Decca Phase 4 series which offers a little bit for many interests. Then there are both highly prized performances and praised recordings in the 'Mercury Living Presence' collections (there are 3 boxes amongst them, the RCA 'Living Stereo' Collections (2 boxes, with ~60 CDs and each under $100.), Philips Original Jackets Collection, 55 CDs under $100. All affording a lifetime of listening pleasure with an introduction into the world of so-called 'classical music'. (I own them all!)
Very good collections, I did not realize they were available at those prices. Some well recorded pieces.
Will check out those recs
Just queued it up in FLAC via Deezer Elite. Two songs in to it and am liking it.
I knew when I first heard the 'bloom' from the cymbal and kick drum combo it was going to be a pleasurable evening!
Thanks for the recommendation. Just listened to it on Tidal and it is everything you say it ia. These recommendations are the best thing about the Asylum
Alan
as noted above, I did the same as you only thru Deezer. Talk about instant gratification!
Found one on eBay and ordered it !
I just got back from Chicago Axpona. Heard so many great new albums.
It used to be that I would have to try to find out what was playing (usually by interrupting the person trying to keep attention on the gear). Now with the Shazam app in my phone telling me the artist and track for everything playing and Deezer or Tidal waiting at home for me to stream at CD quality, nothing could be easier.
I got thirty or forty good music pieces this weekend to add to my collection. Now with Gershwin's World this adds another. The fact that it comes at no marginal cost is even better.
Oh, and the rooms sounded MUCH better than last year! But that is another topic. Thanks again for the music referral.
