This may seem out of left field, but have you considered vintage Acoustats? The Model 3 may be just what the doctor ordered. The Acoustat panels are as close to indestructible as there is. If you went with the Medallion x-former interface, rather than the tubed servos, there would be next to zero maintenance. All of the sonic attributes you are "addicted" to are abundantly available with the Acoustats, and I'm not sure you could find more bang for the buck in that department than the Acoustats. If you have just a little more room, you might also want to consider the Model 4's.

This isn't left field. I have considered most of the (reputedly) better electrostatic and planar magnetic speakers. However.....my future plans take ALL di-pole or large-panel options off the list.
I couldn't get the link to work earlier, but it does now. I see what you're talking about. The ability to keep them near the wall would be a definite plus in a multi-purpose room. Do let us know how they work out.
Just wanted to throw in a thought. I owned hybrid omnidirectional electrostatic designed by Dick Shahanian for 25 years in a 14'x15'.6" room with an 8' ceiling. I had to keep one side of 20 square against the wall. They worked bringing image and depth.....But do not think there are any American made omni hybrids-King makes one.....I do have the 1.7's and love them in a 15'x24' room with two big mono amps. I heard the Janen hybrid in the 60's and dreamed of owning them....
