How is the imaging on the IVa?
Follow Ups:
Norman M is really the one to ask, he has both IVa's and 3.6's and has compared them in the same room. You might want to PM him with your question.
In theory, I'd expect the two to image similarly, with the IVa's having less precise lateral bass localization under 350 Hz and also a bigger image. This is because the acoustical center of the woofer is offset more from the acoustical center of the midrange in the IVa than the 3.x's, because the woofer is physically larger bigger. So what PG says is quite plausible.
The 3.7's also have an interesting acoustical crossover that could tighten the imaging in the transition region, or at least make the shift from mid to woofer more gradual. I'm not sure what the crossover point is and how it compares to the IVa's. The .7's also have a more gradual crossover slope than the IVa's. The IVa's have an acoustical crossover too but the higher frequency woofer panel is located away from the mid/tweeter panel, rather than in the middle.
To make things more complicated, you can use the IVa's with the woofers behind the mid/tweeter panel to save space. That would move the acoustical centers closer together.
But that's theory, most of my experience has been with the Tympani 1-D's, which were two way and have a very different driver arrangement -- my own IVa's haven't been installed yet and an unexpected setback has pushed the installation into the indefinite future. :-|
This is all in the context of the Maggies amazing imaging, the ability when properly set up to disappear and transport you to a new acoustical space has always been a strong point of these speakers.
Absolutely I am a Maggie fan, I just haven't owned anything more than 1.6 in my own house.I prefer not to use dynamic woofers. Classical music probably only comprises ~ 10% or less of my listening, so I don't mind if something isn't truly full range. Great mid-bass is a real bonus.
Thanks for all the comments, it's appreciated. Keep them coming!

It's no insult to the former to say that going from the 1.6's to the IVa's would be like, well, having your first orgasm . . .
PG - who some people here regard as having crazy ideas - thought that the imaging on the one T-IVa he Gunned was not as good as the 3.Xs he had done.
But maybe his room size was insufficient to allow him to sit as far away as you need to, to get good imaging with a T-IVa?
Regards,
Andy
