Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
173.87.215.185
I guess this is my maiden post on this forum. After listening to tympanis over 30 years ago I finally have a pair in the house. And I expected them to have some form of issue once connected. My question for the experts: one sounds great, the other is silent in 2 of the 3 panels -- only the high end working,
I suspect a lose or broken wire within. But before I started tearing into it thought I would ask for advice from you all.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Ernest

Since the IIIC is such an old model you are probably facing disconnects on the corroded wires of the non-functional panels. So if you are DIY handy you can take the socks off and obtain the wire and adhesive from Magnepan (you can get the adhesive separately elsewhere for less money). You will need acetone and lint free cloth to clean off the old glue. There are detailed instructions on rewiring a few models on the tweaks section.
If you are reluctant to take on the project as DIY, then send the speaker to Magnepan and they will do it for you at a reaonable fee and with pro results.
I thought they'd quit supporting some of the older models? Anyone?

Sorry. Should have mentioned they are IIIc Tympamis.

So it's hard to advise what to do. (If you had the XO schematic, you could compare the schematic to "real life" and perhaps see where a break might be?)
But this depends on how "DIY-capable" you are. If you aren't at all (DIY-capable) - then all you can do is send them back to the factory and ask them to fix whatever is wrong. If you are DIY-capable, I suggest the first thing to do is to get the panels naked, so you can see what is going on.
Can you ring Magnepan (Wendell Diller) and ask him to fax you out the T-IIIc XO schematic?
Regards,
Andy
