Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
67.189.206.242
I was at Lyric Hi Fi today and saw an odd looking item. Two 10.5 inch woofers mounted on opposing panels connected by four stainless steel rods nearly an inch thick. The whole thing was open, except for a boxed in area at the back.
Phil Browning said it's the Magnepan SGB-01 dipole subwoofer. They had just unboxed it, but were in the process of hooking it up to a pair of 1.6/QR's. I had no idea this speaker was in the works and can't google up anything, but here's what I learned from Phil.
Dipole free air sub, 375 watts pushing aluminum drivers. Xover box looked conventional with high level and standard sub connections with variable crossover from 25-80 HZ. Rated Freq response is down to 27hz. List price seemed high at 1395.00.
The 1.6/QR's were run by a 200 watt Classe integrated and they used the high level connections. CD player was also Classe, but I don't know much about it. Though the sub was playing for the very 1st time this was easily the best sound I ever heard from the speaker pair. After a few adjustments they became a truly full range speaker and sounded dynamic in a way that reminded me of my old Carver Amazings. Without break-in, the Maggie sub sounded fast, articulate and perfectly blended with the speakers. We were all pretty impressed.
I believe my subwoofer search is at an end at last. Actual shipping, according to Phil, may be 8 weeks off. He and a few other dealers were advanced samples to generate some early orders.

Follow Ups:
But seriously folks, if you really want to get at what your maggies can do
1. Think about changing to a balanced system- amps/pre/cd player/dac
2 Dump the OEM XO
3. Depending on your budget and system get a Behringer CX3410 or DCX2496
3a. The CX3420 has a sub out control of phase/freq/and volume!
4. Bi or triamp with digital amps like Wyred4sound/PS Audio/Bel Canto...
5. Do something to lock down the Maggies free-movement. I wrapped mine with tie-down racheted at the back (search for my thread on this). Currently using Mapleshade Cork/rubber iso underneath the stands, but have Herbies Big Fat Dots on order. THis is cheap and highly effective.
The Mapleshade isoblocks are best under component platforms...their footers are much better under platforms for speakers.
I haven't tried the Herbies, but imagine they'll do well.

Jon

Magnepan is working on a subwoofer.
If this is an 'April 1st' joke then the poster is an idiot and a prick.
April fools jokes are supposed to be funny. What's funny about this?

Your reaction has just elevated it to comic genius.
Thanks!

That was the best April fools post I've read this year. 99.99% believable. We've all been eagerly awaiting for anything new from Magnepan.

if you get your 1.6's "Gunned", ask PG for the sub bass dingus option. you wont need any Maggie dipole subs with that.
.
That's a pretty well fabricated April 2nd Fool's Day story- so you should be able to fabricate the sub, send it to Magnepan, and get it into production!
Ah, they would probably never manufacture it since it has dynamic drivers, but you could build it and tell us what you think :-)

Not high at all for that kind of performance.

..
If this really is a Magnepan subwoofer, I wonder if the chap whose post is linked below will post a retraction?
$1395 seems pretty reasonable to me - a pair of RELs set me back $2100.

This is good! Do they look anything like the glass 'coffee table' sub I have been seeing in some of their recent advertising? I don't think 1395 would be unreasonable if they are up to the task.
Okay...I feel bad now!
This was a day-late April fools joke.
But Magnepan should build this for us anyway!
Cheers...and sorry!

Like most everything else in life, TIMING IS EVERYTHING.
FAIL.
At the end of my first response, I added a BTW (it *is* April 2nd), but deleted it - should have known better. That was a good one!

Yeah me too. I thought I got through this year 'unscathed' (it was the 2nd though).
I believe Celestion did years ago
