We all owe the SMGa a debt of gratitude for providing us with what I and many think is the best XO a maggie can have, however looked at in economic and performance terms, it may not be your best buy.
1- They are all now getting so old that if it hasn't "gone green" and is delaminating, it has "gone red" which means you could have a tweeter failure at any time. (especially if you upgrade it's performance) Even if you go and listen and it sounds fine, it could be massively delaminating.
I would ask him to remove the back cover plates, pull the socks up, and look in with a flashlight to see what color it's in and if any wires are coming off. This visual inspection is the only way to evaluate them, listening won't reveal problems. Still, if you can evaluate your amp on them as well by all means do so.
2- Used MMG's generally won't have these delam issues, and with modding may actually exceed the SMGa's performance due to the QR tweeters. Given that they can be had for $300-350 and that price is so close to what the SMGa tends to go for it might be more prudent to put your money there.
That said, if you have no short term plans to mod your speakers I'd go with the SMGa (assuming you inspect it thoroughly as I said) and it shows no issues, because stock it is better sounding than the MMG, IMHO.
Good luck.

Follow Ups:
I never had a Mag or an Hybrid before; I've had some opportunities to hear some Mags but couldn't afford it back then, especially because of the listening room factor...
Since the prices are good, I am looking into getting a pair of the above mentionned because these are available, used, for local pick-up.
I would be very grateful for any inputs on what I have to look for before seeing and listening to these.
I was going to get some SMGa but, following Peter Gunn's good advice, I decided to go one notch up in terms of $$$. Used Mags are still expensive and rare in my vicinity so I raised my budget from $300 for SMGa to $600 for the MMGII and $700 for the Apogee C M.
Thanks again!
Thanks Peter Gunn....first bass riff that I learned way back then...

.
I have a tentative date to do one this june.
While it has the QR tweeter, the tweeter isn't so much the issue as it has seperate mid and bass drivers like all the true ribbon models, and they simply do not like to play together.
I am going to use this as a test bed and try something. If it works, it may open the door up to the 3 series for the mod.
It's all about the music...
I have the opportunity to purchase a set of SMG's (not a's) locally for around $150 with the notion of upgrading the XO's, panels, etc., but I think after reading your post I'm going to pass. I didn't consider delam and that's not a task I'm willing to take on.
