If I had to buy a new car, I'd probably pay cash, so the finance part of it and the monthly payment wouldn't enter into play.
But the insurance would, and repair costs over the life of a 2024 vehicle are going to be much higher than the repair cost over the life a car built in 2006.
Some of this is because of foolish government mandates like stability control and backup cameras, but the rest of it on the car makers.

Plus a lot of people see all the bells and whistles as bragging fodder. Give me a car with a basic 6 cylinder (old school) and AC and I would be happy. No power windows, just a basic car. We only have 1 vehicle (wife no longer drives), it's a 2012 and has 105k miles on it. Got it used in 2014 with 40k and it runs great with regular oil changes and a couple of new batteries. I have no complaints, yet! :)
Apple CarPlay or the Android equivelent.

Apple Car Play, Android Auto, and smartphone integration. They don't want the rest of it, don't use it, usually can't figure out how to use it.
I could easily live without Apple Car Play and Android Auto but I'd love to have smart phone integration.

Many cars include some form of smartphone integration even w/o the full-blown Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
The basics will include hands-free phone conversations over the car's audio system plus music via bluetooth. Additionally, you can often answer or hang-up a call with a couple steering wheel mounted buttons. Similarly you can move forward or back a track in your music with steering wheel mounted buttons. I had these features in a 2008 vehicle I once owned.

My son installed a new model radio, Sirius, etc that links to my i phone in one of my cars. Very nice to hear Amazon music playing stuff I want to hear instead of a lot of station seeking on the old radio.

Which used to sell two wiring harnesses for the Chevy Cobalt. The expensive one, which was about $100, maintained all existing functions. The cheaper harness eliminated the driver information center, which I can't do without.
Last time I looked at replacement car systems at Crutchfield, only the cheaper of the two harnesses was still available, and the price of the harness was increased.
If I could find a harness that maintained all existing vehicle functions, I'd switch. I don't really care about Apple Car Play, I don't listen to anything but the engine when I drive, but I'd love to be able to speak on the phone hands free.
Wiring in a stereo on a car with a CANBUS isn't as simple as the old days. If everything isn't done exactly right, it's possible that that car won't start, or the check engine light could be lit, or the turn signal sound could be eliminated, etc.

Even though it has the basic (and no longer available) sound system.
Abe, do you know of an add-on device I could use with my existing car stereo? I thought about replacing the stereo but I waited too long. Crutchfield no longer sells the better of the two wiring harnesses and because of the fucking CANBUS, I'd have to give up the DIC (Driver Information Center).
Which includes odometer, outside air temp, trip odometer, remaining oil life, average fuel economy, etc. Can't live without my DIC.
I use a Blue Tooth headset in order to be hands-free in the car, but it's a PITA.
To the best of your knowledge, does anybody sell a device which will integrate the antique stereo in my antique Chevy with a sleek modern device like an iPhone?

I'm not sure what you're looking for.
There are aftermarket bluetooth hands-free devices for your phone. I had one that clipped onto the visor of my '98 Toyota Tacoma. "Hands-free" was required when I had the Tacoma in California. Some other states require it too (not yet here in Colorado).
There are complete head-end stereo/nav units with Apple CarPlay (and Android Auto) that go into your dash replacing the old stereo. Is that what you looked into but would force you give up your DIC ?
But I ordered it direct from Scosche and saved 15 bucks.

hard to argue with that stance!

In a small town of 55,000, with us living near the center, everything is about a 10 minute drive.
Most places I go are 5 minutes away. From my mileage a only drive about 6500 miles a year. I do get it on the highway about once a month though and drive from 30 minutes to an hour.
