I know you are looking to integrate a TV stand, but I've been looking at these styles over the past year or so. Opposite from your description in that the rods are the shelves, and the acrylic (or glass), becomes the side support system.I have similar ones in wood and like the angle the cd's sit at. Mine only have a dowel for the back of each row (edit) though. And flat wood for shelf. Flat wood does keep CD's from slipping through. I suppose you could use a combination of flat acrylic shelf with steel rod back. But the thick acrylic wood be expensive as others have noted.

I owned that wide version. It was relatively easy to assemble and looked good, but had a couple issues:
#1: Not all of the CD/DVD/BluRay packaging will fit on the lower shelves. Especially the specialized box sets.
#2: It was relatively easy while placing on the shelves to "miss" the bar at the back of each shelf, in which case the jewel case or box would fall through to the floor, often at the wall (presumably) against which the rack was positioned, making it a real pain to retrieve. And since the whole thing was a big dust collector it happened often when cleaning.
I sold mine prior to relocating, and I don't think I would buy again.
There must be something wrong with me for not having something wrong.
Yah. I could see that falling through could be a pain.
I have similar wooden ones, but they have a slider that at least keeps the cds tight. I suppose you could make a slider for the plexi version. But now you're talking DIY labour, money and who knows how it would turn out.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Cheers!

Yeah I guess I might have to pass on the thick acrylic... my second half has been complaining for years about the lack of comfort of our vintage Le Corbusier LC3 sofa (it's a very good Italian copy not an actual Cassina). And it's true: it's gorgeous but it's not a sofa where you would spend hours, and that's a shame. So some budget will have to go for something more comfy and modern (if you wanna know, I'm NOT getting rid of my LC3... I'd rather die. it will go in storage...)
I hear you. I hate getting rid of favourites. My wife keeps threatening me with having a garage sale. Nooooo!
Cheers!

Yeahhh I'm the same, that's why I'm paying every month for a storage unit. I just can't get rid of what's in there. And I don't even want to know how much money went in that storage unit since I started renting it...
Now I'm gonna have to empty it a LITTLE BIT to put the sofa. Damn.
