In Reply to: Here is a list of a few of the bands that led me to this point. posted by Tony on February 2, 2005 at 20:02:09:
The first CD that Moby released under the name Voodoo Child is excellent (the second VC release is not bad, but it is a bit different and not as good)
The Album Leaf - very, very nice
Mogwai - freaking amazing
Tristeza - can be somewhat inaccessible
older Curve has some similarities with MBV, but might be harder and less spacy than what you're after
older Jesus And Mary Chain maybe
older Ride maybe
Ester Drang
Sigur Ros
soundtrack for Lost In Translation
A Silver Mount Zion
Six Parts Seven - much jazzier than the rest of these, maybe not ambient enough
Recoil - if you're feeling sinister
in a way, Low might fit in this list, alsoThat's all I can think of at the moment...

Follow Ups:
I have the Moby album you mention, as well as both Sigur Ros CD's.If you want to listen to some really different Moby, try and find the 33 minute version of Hymn (alt.quiet.version). I have it on a CD single that came out a long time ago. Very different sound for him.
I have some Low as well.
I'll check out Mogwai today, as I've heard a bit about them and listened to a few samples.
Thanks for the recommendations!

I don't have the single for Hymn, and I don't recall ever having heard it. Does it sound similar to the Voodoo Child CD?Speaking of Moby, I wouldn't at all be surprised if he got the idea for melding techno and gospel on his Play album from Recoil. Recoil is Alan Wilder, formerly of Depeche Mode, and he did the same thing on a few of the tracks from his second release, which predates Play by ~ 2 years. Moby contributed to a track on the first Recoil CD, so he was obviously aware of Wilder's work. The second Recoil CD is much better than the other two, BTW.

You really have to listen to it. I would put it more in line with the music of artists like Steve Roach, Robert Rich, and Vidna Obmana. Add some noise to the equation and then I think you might have it. This Moby is definitely not as accessible as say Play or Voodoo Child.See if you can find a copy of the single on eBay.
Wait...I just did!

I don't do eBay. I'll keep an eye out for it, though.
